Goodwin appears to be in over his head as a DC. For that matter, so does Streeter as OC unless Dabo is overruling his calls.

Blaming the players in front of the media is usually beyond counterproductive. It might work... Once... But it's a desperation move.

That said, we all know some of it is on the players. We got out coached; but, tackling hasn't changed since peewee football.

That said we've got a true freshman DC and a redshirt freshman OC. The question is not are they perfect. The question is are they getting better.

I say they are on defense and I'm hopeful on offense, still. There have been guys running free even if the ball isn't getting there.

Guess he “didn’t see it coming” either?

a defensive game plan would have been to stack the box to stop the run and if a 2nd string QB could beat you throwing all night? Adjustments maybe? Future NFL defensive linemen? Coaches that have been in the NFL? From the beat down in every aspect there was a lot exposed. Something smells and its either a trust issue or split team or a play don't get hurt mentality. This game look was real bad. Throughout the entire program either own it or get out of the way. So far its been a tough watch for the year. It's one thing to go down fighting with your BEST effort but it's another when you say "whew, that was close but a win is a win." Like it or not college football is a business more so than ever and critical decisions are needed. Don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution.

You nailed it. This type of talent getting whipped like this by a team utilizing 4 or 5 running plays? This says there is something much deeper going on. I'm thinking the defense is getting a little bit tired of having to ay bail out every week. The coaches only talk about complimentary football but the product says otherwise. Venables went thru this as well.

As pedestrian as the defense was vs ND, they weren’t the worst part. Only surrendered 14 points — others came on the blocked punt, interception return TD, and the short field after Cade’s pick. If offense could do anything —anything — that game takes a different direction. Not defending Goodwin or the effort, but 80 percent of the blame for this loss go on the offense/special teams.

If there weren't so many posters that seem to have ignored what you've so stated, then maybe you could be called 'Captain Obvious.'

But since there are darn few posters who recognize the obvious, it is good that you've taken the time to post it.

When asked if he was surprised by lack of physicality and responded with “yeah a little bit “ is quite alarming.

In almost every play the d/f looks confused and out of position, Coach never played Football and it shows in his over his head coaching.

Kevin Steele was famous for talking about fixing the issues post game time after time. That’s what a coach does when they have little ideas left to find a solution. Goodwin is so new to both DC and linebacker field coaching that it’s not unreasonable to say he doesn’t yet understand what is going wrong, so finding the solutions is near impossible without someone else’s help.

Coach speak, what else are they going to say.

Guys could play uninspired football and a good coach will always blame themselves.

Every team knows our linebackers are the weak link but only Notre Dame has had the ability to take advantage of that. Running the ball like Notre Dame did is not easy because you have to have massive guys to block our massive line. Thank goodness, I don't see Louisville, Miami or South Carolina having the bodies to to that.

Defense still isn't our problem

Nov 6, 2022, 1:47 PM

We don't even use the middle of the field on offense to help open up the passing game and the receivers. You can't have much of a passing attack without that. Instead we run down the sidelines which acts as another defender and throw 50-50 balls to them.

Normally “the weather” affects both teams. ND overcame the elements, he just uses it as an excuse. We haven’t clicked on offense all year, in good weather and bad.

I don’t think they trust DJ throwing to the middle of the field.

What he should have said. “Our DL is not strong or physical enough. 11 still not at full strength. Our Linebackers are too slow and too small, and don’t tackle well. (30, 25, 24) Our blitzes are predictable and easy to pick up. 98 is lazy, takes plays off. Corners are too small, poor tacklers. We lose contain, don’t cover tight ends well, don’t swarm to the ball. We lack intensity. The players don’t respect or fear the coaches.

All that being said, when the Defense holds a team to two offensive TDS, we should win. When our Offense is not just inept, but hands 14 points to the other team, it makes our job that much harder. Special team has to block punt rushers. That’s not hard to do. Just sayin’.

Re: TNET: Goodwin owns defensive issues as Irish run all over Tiger defense

Well said and the punt block changed the whole game and we did not even try to block them other than waving at the rusher with a lookout block....BUT we started the game with thoughtless penalties - a good indication we simply were not prepared to play.
Come back Jeff and BV! You are both great coordinators where you can focus on what you know rather than all the noise from every side!
