I would argue that QB is also a position of need unless Tyson has a covid year.

So how many portal QB's are willing to come compete with an established starting QB when they can go somewhere they are assured to start?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Several transfer qbs last year competed for jobs.***

Of the ones who are left, I'm guessing they all are going to have to compete wherever they go.

Who is the established QB? Please don't say Cade. I realize that this is his 1st year starting, but I didn't see much improvement. His recognition skills may have been a little better, his decision making didn't improve, his arm strength and foot speed are terrible. He is just not very strong or athletic. I won't even speak on his continuing habit of playing hero ball. Like I've stated, unless Cade all of a sudden is blessed with some divine infusion of athletic ability to overcome his other deficiencies, I don't see him improving enough to bring home a CFB championship. Bring in another QB and let the competition begin and let the best QB start against UGA in the opener.

I don’t understand this take at all… you ppl do realize
Cade just played his first year as a starter as a soph… take a look at the qbs up for the heisman … nix, Daniels, penix … all super seniors who were very mediocre qbs the first couple years … it’s actually ok to develop and you can throw Travis in that same convo. It’s ignorant to think we are gonna get a DW or TL every single cycle but some of you unrealistically believe that… he’s capable of having 2 great years.

There are no elite teams with inexperienced QBs starting their first season.

People expect every QB to be like Trevor, and that’s not the way it works in the real world

Do you mean elite teams that have true freshmen starting? That's pretty rare, but it definitely happens.

There are inexperienced QBs that come in and play well all the time. Bama's QB had less experience than Cade coming into this year.

Jalen Milroe came into 2023 with 212 career snaps and 1 start.
Cade came into 2023 with 224 career snaps and 1 start

It's really interesting. How can you keep a roster with everyone a free agent, every year! NFL does not do it.

Tyson? Iron Mike never went to college.

I joke, but is anybody ready to risk an entire year with a backup who never really played? Get real and get into the fn portal for a quarterback, defensive end, linebacker, cornerback and offensive linemen. We need about seven experienced AND talented players out of the portal to get this thing rolling again. FACTS.

Don't disagree, but the problem is scholarships. We don't have those slots unless a bunch of guys start entering the portal. Having said this, if we only had 1 spot available, I'd get an experienced QB with it, rather than another OL.

I don't know who is available, but an experienced grad transfer with 1 year of elidgability left who has the developed skills to be a competent backup would be a really good move in my totally unqualified opinion.... Like where are the Hunter Johnsons of the world in the portal? Players that are not necessarily great (and they know it), but can play well enough to keep you competitive if the turds hit the fan vs starting a totally unprepared freshman..

A program like ours should not be this inexperienced in the most important position on the field. Having an experienced backup is essential. If Cade happened to go down early, we would have a real problem, not an opportunity. Rolling the dice and hoping for the best doesn't seem like a great plan to me.

Why do you assume this is the plan. Dabo brought in Hunter Johnson and Paul Tyson to be that experienced emergency QB. Why do you think that won't happen again?

Tyson has no experience, other than some mop up duty. He rode the pine at ALA. V obviously has no experience other than handing the ball off a couple of times. I'm not assuming this is the plan. I'm suggesting we should have a backup with some experience rather than rolling the dice with what we have.

In terms of no experience...Matt Cassel out of USC played very little or than mop-up duty and was a backup to Matt Leinhart. He had a longer career in the NFL than Leinart did and with more success.

Thanks to Tyler, you have two new highly experienced asst. coaches that replaced failed inexperienced buddy hires. That call lit a fire under coach's rear end and the change was visible. I hate to break it to people, but Dabo makes mistakes (along with great successes). He is human and as a leader fell prey to insular logic. He's not the first and won't be the last. In parting, the only constant is change. Adapt and survive or fall the way of the dodo.

I know Shelton Lewis is listed as corner but when he made all those interceptions this year it appeared to me he was play in a safety position. I might be wrong, but if I'm right then that is a definite option.

I don’t get the stubbornness of Dabo and not using the portal is about to catch up to him. Hopefully he will use the portal some going forward.
