Nope, no one knows what will happen for sure the rest of the way, but I think that a lot of us feel that with the tougher games it's going to be a Toss up bc we're as talented as any team we will play, but we're not as talented with our position coaching, and I totally believe that's where our biggest problems are with this team. There just isn't enough of experience within our position coaching and it has shown up in all of our losses the past couple of years with players constantly being out of position playing against as good or equally talented as we are. Just being a couple of steps out of position can get us beat on about every play, and we're not super 5 star loaded to cover up for guys being out of position. Our younger inexperience coaches are teaching what they think will work, and not what has been proven over a lot of years that works...

the thing that hurts most is we have CFP talent and could have been these last two seasons but something is truly truly wrong at the core ideology of the program

it's not a fluke anymore. Tennessee , Carolina, and now Florida State

Except we don't/didn't have CFP talent the last few years. We had guys that were evaluated as having elite talent when they were juniors in high school. Long time between then and when you're actually playing games.

Maybe if we had guys that were elite in CFB and they got hurt and couldn't play in crucial games, but these were guys that apparently were great in HS but were huge duds in college. Not CFP talent

Players & coaches have lost THE edge we had in the teens.

1
8

Sep 25, 2023, 7:40 AM

FSU had it in the ‘90s and we had in the teens. We knew we were going to win and we just made the plays to win I.e., ‘15 ND, ‘16 Lou.

It has been a downward trend since ‘21. I don’t want to say it but CLEMSONING is slowly returning. We play like Tarzan on some plays the play like Jane on others. The question is does Dabo still have it in home it turn it around. Does he have the progressiveness to change with the times? It starts with Coaching. I’m not sure this all Clemson coaches experiments is working.

We all know what the answers are, but nobody wants to say it. This is a result of hiring your buddies, lazy recruiting resulting in recruiting busts, and handing out 5 heart scholarships to friends and family. Clemson‘s football program used to be a fearsome and feared force. Now it’s just Dani’s social club. Dabo is beyond reproach. He brought us 2 national titles and six playoff appearances. He can stay as long as he wants, but the problems are clear.

If it happens over and over again, I think that points to a trend. On the goal line with two downs - pound the ball up the middle. Save “cute” for combing your hair in the mirror.

Think about it. How can you miss on receivers for three straight years? It’s by not doing your homework. My God Wake Forest had better receivers than us last year. And honestly, what elite running back that we brought in lately? I’m not a big fan of Shipley. He’s a great guy, but number one running back in the nation out of high school? I think not. Outside of defensive line, we’ve dropped off in every position.

Also, I know for a fact that Tyler Brown had to be handed to the Clemson coaching staff. They didn’t even look at him initially. He’s probably the second best receiver on the team now. Complete lack of doing your homework.

3

Sep 25, 2023, 10:14 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Is Clemson's loss to FSU another fluke or a trend? ]

We mostly have 4 star receivers, it may just be a matter of coaching fundamentals and not the WRs that we recruit.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Is Clemson's loss to FSU another fluke or a trend?

1

Sep 25, 2023, 10:27 AM

this is correct, but it reminds me of Florida State‘s demise years ago when their team was stacked with four and five star players and they were routinely losing four and five games a year. They were recruiting players to either a poor fit for the college game, or a poor fit for their system. Simply going after recruiting ranking. I see a little bit of this in Clemson’s. Some of these so-called four-star receivers are slow and can’t run routes.

Interesting stat on the performance of the outside receiver. Knew it was a glaring weakness but did not know it was this bad.

With Brown, Stellato, and Williams, can we not cross train someone to move outside even though they do not fit the prototype for this position?

Randell is not the answer. We need to quit trying to fit a round peg in a square hole. Wesco will solve the problem next year thankfully and maybe JS comes back...

A fluke is something that rarely happens.
Look at the last 8-10 games. Trend!
Look at our assistant coaches resumes. Trend
Look at our scholarship breakdown. Trend

We’re not elite right now in a lot of areas. It’s ok to demand better. Time to reverse the trend! 8 games to do it!!!

I honestly believe that last Saturday will bring about a

2

Sep 25, 2023, 9:01 AM

change in the way Dabo coaches at the end of games. Because, as you said, I really think he was under the same delusion you brought up, which was, just hang around, and we will find a way to win it in the end. With Brent Venables on staff, and generational QBs like Watson and Lawrence around, that was the way it worked. Butt, Saturday was a sudden wakeup call from that dream. This current team, and coaching staff has not been through those trials by fire, and did not do the things it took to pull out that close game. So, changes will be afoot going forward, I do believe.

Nothing Dabo has said makes me believe he'll make changes.

2

Sep 25, 2023, 11:18 AM

After the game he sounded like Tommy Bowden, REPEATEDLY making the "one-play-away" excuses, rather than him saying anything about play-calling mistakes, failure to utilize the portal, etc. He seems to be delusional from drinking his own Kool-Aid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hmmm

1
3

Sep 25, 2023, 9:07 AM

“ Clemson entered the season with what I see as a major weakness at outside wide receiver following the departure of Joseph Ngata. Clemson’s two starting outside wide receivers combined for just 41 yards against FSU. Conversely, Florida State used the portal to add Keon Coleman, who went for 86 yards and 2 TDs, including the game-winner. Without Coleman, they’d likely be 2-2. Instead, Clemson sits at 2-2 (0-2). Nobody wants to see Clemson use the portal like FSU, but merely one player can make that big of a difference.”

But, but, the low IQ sunshine pumpers say the portal doesn’t make any diff. Idiots.

Amen Ryan!!

I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message.

Re: Hmmm

Sep 28, 2023, 1:01 PM

Against LSU and Clemson Coleman totaled 14 receptions for 208 yards and 5 TD's.

To add to that, Johnny Wilson, who FSU got from the portal prior to the 2022 season, totaled 12 receptions for 198 yards against LSU and Clemson.

So, the two of those WR's combined for 26 receptions for 406 yards and 5 TD's in those two games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Same personnel issues in past 3 years...

1

Sep 25, 2023, 10:24 AM

also, not sure losing Ngata left a void in that position bc Ngata was never really 'a dude' in this program. Take the lack of a top end WR out of it, we should still be 4-0 with simple execution of the offense...that's a larger problem.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Same personnel issues in past 3 years...

3

Sep 25, 2023, 10:42 AM

Tee Higgins replaced Mike Williams which were are two GREAT receivers. We are still searching for their replacement a couple years later at WR.... Have not had a dominant big receiver in the line up since....We also need to look at the WR coaching and development too... have not been same with that WR group since Jeff Scott left.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sep 28, 2023, 11:49 AM

and blamed DJ, like many, but at this point its very warranted criticism. The results speak for themselves. To steal from Tim Grover's (legendary trainer) talent labels, we used to have a bunch of Cleaners and Closers with Scott...now its just a lot of Coolers with Grisham.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good Article Ryan... but

1

Sep 25, 2023, 11:15 AM

While the mistakes are glaring, and looking at a box score really puzzles me to figure out how we're losing games - I do believe that this years team is better than last year's and 2021. I believe Garrett is starting to figure it out, and the defense is coming along nicely. Wiggins being out for an extended period will certainly stunt that progress, so hope he's not down for long.

Maybe I'm naive, and the results don't show it yet, but even with the Duke debacle I think we're starting to climb again. We'll see how the rest of the year plays out, but I'm not writing the program off yet.

Agree 100% that we need to get back to the WFW mentality. That'll come I think.

Neither. It's a pendulum that swings both ways
The swing favored us for some time and I for one am grateful
and it will swing that way again in time. There are no quick fixes
for the pendulum to swing our way once more. These unfortunate happenings
like the hit on CK and the scoop for 6 are part of that pendulum swing.

We are not a complete team. It's pretty obvious we are a work in progress.
The pendulum will swing our way , at the earliest , once we are a complete team.

And as apparent as it is now that we continue to battle undue adversity , it
will be apparent too when the pendulum is beginning to swing our way.

And no , that doesn't mean we do nothing and accept the status quo.

It does mean we remain patient and supportive of Dabo and the team as we
go forward. They deserve that much.
