benefit Clemson in the long run. Commend and respect Dabo for sticking to his beliefs. I’m not anti portal, but should only be used to fill immediate gaps with kids who fit, eg 1-2 per year.

The better or best players in the portal are in there seeking money from the NIL, and that is the biggest reason we haven't signed any players from the portal, and that isn't Dabo's fault...

That’s simply not true. We didn’t offer elite offensive linemen and missed them. Those guys weren’t wanting a bag. There a many quality depth pieces in the portal that don’t garner a large bag. Players that are more ready to step in and help immediately vs hoping true freshman can step in a play right away.

Dojng things the right way got us 2 Titles. Thats hard to do. Dabo has said manyntime Clemson isnt done.
What players are guarantees in the portal?
It's a wash this year. We don't even know which players will step on the roster vs the players coming in. If we have 5 freshman starters again this year that's a sign that recruiting is going well. Dabo doesn't give away starting spots. He is making all the hard decisions. Dabo vs Portal. Go Tigers!!

We got two titles pre portal and NIL. Time will tell if Dabo can make another run during this era without utilizing the portal. I personally feel he will eventually cave and start to bring in 2-3 players per year.

Why is Dabo's stance considered "doing things the right way?"

The transfer portal isn't evil or morally wrong.

A player wanting to transfer shouldn't be viewed as bad. Is seeking a new job in the real world bad? Is taking a promotion bad? Is changing companies bad? Of course it isn't, so why is it viewed so negatively here when someone feels that another college might be better for them?!?

Likewise, why is it bad for a college football program to accept transfers? Athletic scholarships are one year renewable. Scholarships are not typically multi-year contracts. If our coaches feel that a player can help us win and fits the standards for our program, there is nothing morally or ethically wrong with us bringing him in. After all, the goal is to have an elite program. It is funded and supported accordingly.

If we are trying to maintain the purity in college football by generally being against the portal, we are really late. To truly make college football what it was intended to be, we need to go back to college football players having to gain admission to school just like everyone else, with no exceptions made for subpar academic performance just because they are good at sports. We also need to eliminate athlete-friendly majors, as well as additional accommodations for players such as special classes and tutors. We also need to get the exorbitant amount of money out of college sports, as they detract from what it should truly mean to be a student-athlete.

Of course, all of that is a pipe dream because that ship sailed long ago. Given where we are, college football is a big business. Players should be free to transfer, and coaches should be free to accept them if it improves their team, without some arbitrary moral judgment against them for doing things the "wrong way."

The right way is to commit to a school and get an education. Have something when your sports career is over. If life changes for you then by all means find an opportunity to better yourself.

BUT the portal is either for guys that could not cut it at their previous stop or 5 star guys that have been involved in back room deals to get a bigger payday. Everyone has an opinion but don’t feel the portal has hurt us at all. Recruiting in general has fell off. Maybe coordinators leaving or whatever but not getting top 10 talent is and has been the culprit. It’s not complicated in football. The guys with the best players normally win. You want to maintain great relationships with high school coaches and get the top tier kids or do you want to get your booster friends to get together and pay top dollar for a guy that may stay for a year while throwing the kids you did recruit under the bus.
JMO and no intention in downplaying someone else’s opinion on how the program should be ran.

Dabo doesn't hate the portal or think it's morally wrong. And he'll use it sparingly if it fits. He just would much rather recruit freshmen and develop them for 3 or 4 years. And he's very very good at it. And if you can recruit and retain, it may be the best model for the future.

Change companies 2-3 times in 4 years and see what people think of that. You will probably rationalize that as being ok too.

I would say it's the right way because Clemson University is an educational institution, and Dabo still puts graduation and the chance for his players to succeed post-football among his top objectives. That's just one of the things he's doing right.

Hate to agree with Greg McElroy, but he has a accurate understanding of the 2024 Tigers!

95% of the guys in the portal are not good pick-ups for Clemson.
The other 5% have their hand out for NIL money, looking for a pot of gold.
Maybe 1% would make an Impact at Clemson, so just signing a portal player is not a big score.

FSU is getting in trouble, because they offered a kid too little money, and he squealed to the NCAA and went back to his original school. Avoid the problems, stick with our good recruits.

Go Tigers, Beat the Dawgs!

The pieces are there, IMO.

Cade should be better.
Mafah is a good RB.
WRs are talented, just have to stay healthy.
Briningstool can be elite.
OL has to make huge strides under Luke.

The key is with Luke but I can't imagine that process to be quick.

All you do JK is come up with reasons to put down Dabo.
Teams go through cycles, except maybe Alabama. the
portal had nothing to do with our so called " off years"
in which we managed 30 wins. Dabo does it the right way
and it will pay dividends in the end.

Alabama goes through cycles too!

Watch them this year, with Saban gone. We killed them a few years ago in San Fransisco.
But that year they were undefeated and the best College team of all time!!

Look at last year, got lucky and beat Auburn, and Georgia.
Their luck ran out in the playoffs against Michigan!

When Dabo left Alabama, the entire coaching staff got fired. Definite downcycle!

To win a championship, your team has to be very special, and lucky!!

I would call 1975 the bottom of a Clemson downcycle, 2-9 was awful, getting whooped in the Valley, and on the road!
Last year, 9-4 has plenty of room for improvement in 2024. We have a good team.

The portal is a one way street for us. Since we don't sign transfers to replace the players that we lose, we will only ever have a young, inexperienced roster.

Our recruiting evals and player development have to be top notch.

Do you factor in the number of draft eligible players that return to Clemson instead of declaring for the draft? We seem to have as many or more than most teams return instead of declaring early so that will offset some of the experience lost to the portal and keep us on a more level playing field with other teams that lose players to the portal and more to early draft declarations than we do.

A lot of teams are returning draft eligible players. So no, that wouldn't factor in.

But even if it did, it's still not helping us offset the losses from the portal. The results speak for themselves.
