That interview does not have me feeling good about our future. Until he is ready to accept what college football is today not what it was 5-10 years ago and adapt to using the portal like a number of programs have done with some having great success....several turning their programs completely around in one season... I am beginning to wonder if he even has that in him at this point. Hate to say it but, just maybe there needs to be a little pruning at the base of the tree first...maybe that will wake the tree up out of hibernation.

I too agree about the portal, but there are a few serious issues about players coming into the program that need addressing; little things like being able to block, tackle, hold on to a football, and kicking a football through two uprights when the game is on the line.

Interesting because I had the opposite reaction. He said he knows exactly what the problems are. That makes me feel a lot better because a lot of his prior comments have made it seem as if he’s unsure what the “bizarre” issues are. This was much more direct; as if he already has a plan to address it.

Re: The pruning sounds alot like the 5 year oil change back when he got the job

Nov 1, 2023, 2:13 AM

That's what I gathered too. It would also be insane to come out midway through the season and say "yes, we're firing coaches and diving into the portal at the end of the season". That would be a sure fire way to have the team and staff quit on you and finish 4-8. We'll have to see what happens in the off-season this year. I do stick behind him, he's proven he can make those tough decisions, hes done it in the past. And it's not like he's wrong about eliminating the fumbles and its a different story.

Duke - eliminate 2 fumbles that resulted in 14 points and make your field goals and we win.

FSU - eliminate the fumbles OR make your field goal we win.

Miami - Shipley makes it another inch it's a TD and we win.

NC State - Eliminate the picks and either complete the pass or just have an incomplete on we once again win.

So he's not wrong. But that doesn't undo it and it doesn't change that we have a turnover problem.

I have an apple tree that needs an oil change.
I guess pruning is a good analogy: stimulate new growth, increase production, remove suckers, get rid of dead wood.

Sometimes you can just grab the neighborhood kid with no experience in pruning and the next thing you know, that tree is dead from shock. Or they end up preventing it from blooming.

There's a lot of fans out there that can do some pruning too. They can prune their iptay tree, their travel tree, their T-Net membership tree, their golf paws 1000 per year tree... just saying. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.

Geez, it’s just November. We have a game in four days! Focus on that! WIN that! I don’t care what Dabo said or Tyler said. We’ve got football to be played! Win on Saturday!!
We can talk about the past and all our 10 win seasons, we can talk about all the change that needs to happen, we can see if Dabo will change his attitude on the transfer portal and coaching hires all in December but for now we have four games left! Just W I N !

I like your attitude, but please tell all of less dramatic fans just what Clemson needs to do to win Saturday when they couldn't beat less talent over the last two weeks than what Notre Dame brings Saturday to Beath Valley.

He actually said that he appreciates that Dabo is a person of faith.

Also, questioning Dabo being the second highest paid coach in college football since we haven’t finished anywhere close to second place in several years now.

hes being paid for what he HAS done, and what he WILL do. not just this year. the man brought two national titles to clemson, which I never thought I'd see, several ACC titles, and several big bowl wins. The real crime is Brad Brownell conning clemson out of money for the past 14 or whatever years. how many national titles or ACC titles does he have again????

Then why haven’t you fixed them?

If you’re talking about staff or player personnel… excuse me but didn’t you hire and recruit every single one of these guys? So really… who’s actually the problem?

Dabo… the answer is Dabo. He’s the problem and he’s been the problem and he just stepped in another huge hole by running his mouth.

how old are you? I ask because its obvious you have no real world experience. people make bad hires, it happens. Do you want him to fire every single position coach mid season? yeah that would look great to recruits and potential coaching candidates......

And which capable asst coach is available to start this week at Clemson and able to fix our problems by Saturday? Sounds like Dabo realizes what needs to be done and will after the season. You can say he should have known before now but he has been patient with his assistants up to a point.

It ain't fun but let's see how it works out. Maybe everyone on TNet should post whether or not you were for or against hiring an assistant WR coach when Bowden left. I was in favor of giving Dabo a chance based on his recruiting and support from the players. I was at Clemson 1969-1973 through 3 HCs and the BEST season we had was 5 wins. I fully expect to top that this year, maybe not by much though.

Look Dabo SHOULD defend his team and if he didn't I would be more worried. However quoting God and lying through your teeth can only go so far - too much like Bobby Bowden who was a master at that. Let's just say that our roster is not what it was, our coaching staff is not what it was and we are going to fight thruugh this and retrun to the top where we no longer lie - it took work to get there and it will take work to get back.
I LOVED IT but I really don't want to hear about 2 titles in 7 years when it was 2 titles in 4 years just three years ago. I want to hear about the future and whet we are doing to get back to being in the conversation where we have you not been for 3 years. We all have ot accept that you can't win them all but you can't blow off 3 years of not even being considered as beeing in the top tier as a "bad year."
Fast firward to a 12 team playoff - we are not even in the mix for three years and that simply is not acceptable.
You can say what you want but right now we are paying for a 5-star hotel and staying in a 3-wtar Hamptom Inn - it's OK and its clean but nothing you can get excited about.
Let's admit that and talk about how to get back to 5-star instead of living in denial!

Oh please don’t put this on God! He’s busy in the Middle East right now defending Israel and I’m just not sure Clemson football is a priority like it must have been in 2015. I’m not going to praise him if we win nor blame him if we lose. I’m looking at the man responsible and that’s Dabo. Also, if we lose every game from here on out was that God?

I can answer this myself, No. it’s on the coaches and the players, but let’s not forget the other team and their talents too. It’s a sport. One of wills and God should not be invoked like this. It’s blasphemous

Coach Swinney will do what he does, and trying to analyze his verbiage for hints about possible changes in the off-season is a waste of time. I don't believe he will have a carbon copy approach next year following such a mediocre season. My expectation is that any changes will be incremental, not wholesale and dramatic. In the meantime, he will defend his team and his coaching staff, as he should. With several games left that is also a wise tactic.

He who takes all the responsibility gets all the credit and blame, and the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. If things improve, life will go on as before. If they don't, it won't. I have no idea what Las Vegas would say about the chance for a significant and relatively speedy reversal of the slide, but Coach more than deserves the chance to right the ship while the fanbase works to embrace more realistic aspirations about a quick return to the top.

The answer is presently unknowable, the question being whether (as Coach claims) this season will have been an aberration, or part of a continuing trend.

I get that people want Dabo to be open to using all the resources available to him like the transfer portal. However, the comments about other programs using it to turn their programs around in a year shows some of those folks don't really understand where Clemson is in the football world. See, when you have program that goes 1-11 or 4-8 then, yes, the transfer portal can help you make some big changes. But when you're consistently winning ten games and your conference championship it's not that easy to find players more talented than what you have already. There wasn't a Trevor or Deshawn out there in the transfer portal when DJ was struggling. Instead, there were other DJ's or worse. Do you honestly think there are five NFL caliber offensive linemen out there waiting to be scooped up? Where Clemson has suffered is in talent evaluation anyway so who's going to decide who is better than someone the coaches already thought was great? It's coaching that is suffering most. Maybe, just maybe Riley will prove to have been worth the money but so far he looks like a guy who only looks good when he has elite talent for the league he's in to work with. He doesn't seem to be able to do much with the clay in front of him. Lincoln may have terrible defenses but he's turned more than one lump of coal into a diamond QB. Garret can't get a half decent game out of a supposed 5 star. Wes Goodwin doesn't have the intensity or killer instinct that Venebles had and it shows. And, well, truth of the matter is the rest of our opponents have gotten better. I think we forget that other teams have something to do with your record. We look a USC or Georgia and say they don't play anybody but when we were at our best we didn't see near our equal in competition until the playoffs but we'd defend our weak schedule. Now we lose a few games and we act like these other teams are all patsies we should roll. But when we did they were patsies and we acted like they were all vintage Alabama.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"Tyler" sounded like a coot...

Re: TNET: Swinney says he will defend his players, but sometimes the tree needs to be pruned

Nov 1, 2023, 9:54 AM

I think we need to be careful about invoking God in football...specifically using "Name it Claim It" Joey Osteen-type theology. Claiming that you will be better won't make you better. If I go out to play a round of golf and suck at the 1st 9 holes I could declare "By the Power of God, I am going to play far better gold on the back 9". The reality is that I will continue to suck out loud because I truly suck at golf and no amount of invoking God in such a cheap manner is going to improve my gameplay.

I am all for thanking God and giving honor to Him for your ability to play well or even for just the health to play at all, but crossing the line into invoking God like He's the field general Who is invested in you winning a football game is just wrong. It's bad theology to use God as a scapegoat for bad performance or any performance.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Swinney says he will defend his players, but sometimes the tree needs to be pruned

Nov 2, 2023, 1:26 AM

It's not just one season. Since Trevor left, there have been a lot of questionable decisions made. How do you let a kid continually screw up and keep throwing extra coaching, nutritionists, workouts...resources at him and see no sustained improvement so he transfers. We were told this year that Klubnik was "dialed in"...maybe he's dialing the wrong number, because all I'm seeing is, poor decision making and miscues. The offense is like watching Keystone Cops...no one seems to know where to be and when. Calling back the bench-riding kicker was detrimental. The defense needs to show pressure, they play loose in almost every game. How do WE lose to Duke? Miami? NC State? This is not an "elite" program by my definition. Don't get me wrong, I love my Tigers 100%, it just hurts my soul when they have such poor showing. The team is only as good as the coaches, so that's where my finger is pointed. When someone gets paid anywhere in the neighborhood of what Dabo makes, fans, media, IPTAY expect high dollar outcome for the high dollar expenditure. Maybe the AD needs to look at this a bit closer, because we will start losing pipeline players that have talent to other programs, and if thw team plays badly, ticket sales go down, IPTAY suffers, Clemson gear will lose momentum, and other marketing and profit making programs that Clemson needs.I don't know about you, but I don't get the CW channel...and the Tigers should not be relegated to the corner.
