Perfect breakdown of Dabo being a CEO type coach.

Nov 2, 2023, 1:27 PM

Dabo has been as good as his staff. When we won at an unprecedented level; we had the best coordinators and position coaches available. This team is a reflection of its position coaches and coordinators.

The defense is good, not great. Goodwins inexperience shows when he loses aggression and plays not to lose. He has the players to be the best defense in the country. Should have been last year. 75th or worse in many catagkries last year. The defensive line isn’t as good as when Bates was there. The linebackers blow wheel routes and TE routes routinely. Coach Reed has done an amazing job with the secondary. I almost feel he would have been a better choice than Goodwin. Heck, I wanted Dan Lanning (before he left for Oregon) or at least a Will Mucachump coordinator. How about Chad Staggs from Coastal Carolina under Jamie Chadwell? (I went to school with Chad and may be biased.)

The offensive line is garbage. Wasn’t much better under Caldwell. The play calling has gotten somewhat better. The receivers continue to regress under Grisham. Dabo did a great job coaching them. Spiller does an okay job at RB coach. I can’t express how much I love CJ as a person and a player. I think he needs a few more years as an analyst or GA before becoming a position coach. Richardson has made the passing game worse. No doubt. Come Stoudt as offensive player development coach is asinine and obviously has not had any positive player development under his tenure.

I get why Dabo beloved he could promote from within and continue to win. The experiment has caused a steady decay in on the filed product since 2018. It’s time to go back to the recipe that got him here. Hire the best. Let those former players/buddies kids/family members learn as GA’s and analyst. Kinda hard to hand a 15-year-old kid the keys to a Lamborghini when they’ve never driven a car.

Agree!

Wasn't much better under Caldwell but he did actually develop more with lesser talent. Or at least lesser rated talent. Maybe we chased stars but we didn't miss on that many, they just haven't developed.

I really thought the Stanford analogy was excellent. And David and Dabo are very close. Just saying.

Agree with everything you said. I wish you had called in instead of Tyler, perhaps the message would have been clearer, albeit softer.

You know, anyone who says we miss Brent Venables dearly when describing why we aren't as good as we were obviously has nit been watching the games. With an average offense and hanging on to the ball, the defense would have us undefeated right now. The defense and its coordinator are not the problem.

We do miss BV dearly. His influence, energy and passion went beyond the defense and he was a key confidant of Dabo and someone Dabo could trust and lean on.

i have absolutely never understood Dabo doesn't earn his salary argument

what a complete joke

Dabo Swinney gave that Tyler some good attitude

you don't play with CEOs like that. They will quickly show you why they are where they are. they are worth every penny

You obviously haven’t interacted with many professional CEOs.

I've met that guy, and he probably lied about his comments to get on air and he's a stain on our orange. FT

+1 for Recognizing the TigerNet Manifesto

That Tyler spewed out to Dabo.

"I will say this for Tyler, if you have a talk show and you're underperforming, you get paid handsomely to go to your talk show, so if some guy wants to read a tiger insider message board manifesto, you've got to take to some extent," Thamel said. "Now, I don't have any problem with Dabo responding, but you can't show up at 4-4 at your talk show and expect lilacs and roses to be thrown at you."

Show me a man who doesn’t believe in himself enough to be criticized for his hubris and narcissistic ways, and I’ll show you someone who has never accomplished anything meaningful in their lifetime.

Maybe the reason that I had a problem with Dabo's response to Tyler is that I think Proverbs 16:18 fits Dabo right now. Dabo's response was to give a laundry list of his accomplishments which are great. I think that the problem is that Dabo feels that he can repeat those results while handcuffing himself. That is the exact pride that the verse is referring to. He is putting limits on himself that go beyond those defined by ethics (that should be there), and he expects to beat the best coaches in the college game.

Two years ago, Dabo admitted that he felt no need to look outside the program for new coordinators. If he would have made an honest effort to see who else was available, maybe he would have still hired Streeter and Goodwin, but he didn't. I have to feel that the searches for position coaches were similar. There is nothing unethical about hiring from outside the program, so the young men in our program deserve for him to review any potential coach that would fit the program.

Dabo continually limits himself on scholarships. Last year, a lot of conversation revolved around the fact that we didn't have scholarships available to use the portal. I like the fact that Dabo rewards walk ons. I like the fact that when he gives a recruit a scholarship that their keeping it is not tied to their development as a player. However, recruits, and sometimes their families, have come to Clemson because of that scholarship. Walk ons did not, so I don't see why there should be an issue with using that scholarship the next year to advance the program. Why would that be unethical?

Now for the dreaded transfer portal. I am definitely not saying that we need to build the program based on the portal. I am not necessarily even saying that we need to use it at all. What I am saying is that we need to make an honest effort to see who might be in it that would improve the program. It's not factual that all of those young men are there for the highest bidder. Actually most are not. I may be wrong, but I suspect that our interest in the portal mirrors that of Dabo's interest in outside coaches during his coordinator search. This does not betray a recruit like Dabo has inferred. We recruited Peter Woods last year despite having very good players that had been waiting their turn at DT. Why is the portal different?

Look, I think that Dabo is a great football coach. He might be the best in college football. However, there are a lot of very, very good coaches, and as great as I think Dabo is, I don't think that he can continue to limit himself and continue to compete with them. Only pride would make him think that he could.

Hiring Riley was a step in the right direction. Not because of how it worked out. Streeter's offense looked pretty good with Cade at the helm. The thing that it showed is that Dabo might be willing to swallow his pride. I'll be interested to see if he is interested in any more servings this year.

the accomplishments list was the answer to the salary question

Nov 3, 2023, 9:47 AM

he asked how can he justify his salary. Well the salary was bestowed upon him by his past accomplishments. So thats old hat, old news. If he were to win another 2 championships then does Tyler think that salary number stays where it is now? So the justification is the trophy case. You get paid based on what you've done. In the future all that stuff will be reevaluated by the board of trustees or whoever but we're no where near that tipping point nor to I ever think we'll get there. Meaning i don't think Dabo will ever hang around just to hang around. He strikes me as a guy who is constantly trying to push the limits.

"Dabo isn't an X's and O's coach," is a misconception bred by...

1

Nov 3, 2023, 1:05 PM

media talk from Shaking the Southland and members who swallowed that putrid trash and regurgitated it here on Tnet. Some quacker, if I remember correctly.

It sounded good to those who disrespected him for never having held a coordinator's job. Venables gained his notoriety as a DC for Dabo. Jeff and Tony gained their experience and notoriety as coordinators under Dabo's tutelage.

I'm not a fan of those who troll Dabo on Tnet. There was a time when many of the very same folks screamed blood murder when Dabo was hired rather than Lane Kiffen, Mike Leach and other mediocre coaches we're hired.

Tnet rang with the voices of those screaming 'ANYONE BUT DABO.'

You think ESPN analysts are getting their ideas from STS & Tnet commenters?!?!

"Dabo isn't an X's and O's coach," is a misconception bred by media talk from Shaking the Southland and members who swallowed that putrid trash and regurgitated it here on Tnet.

I'd be shocked if these ESPN analysts ever heard of Shakin' The Southland or TigerNet. I'd be shocked if they've ever read STS or T-Net articles, let alone the comments.

Clemson is just one of many teams. You think the analysts are reading the top 2-3 fan-sites for every major football school? No way. There aren't enough hours in the day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You think they don't pay attention to social media?

Nov 4, 2023, 1:37 AM

I remember you, Razz. STS would dump on Dabo and you'd be here puking up what they said in 20 minutes or less. That was 10-12 years ago and you're nothing but a vulture picking over dead carcasses.
