ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit says Clemson isn't done yet

There's that question again

Sep 7, 2023, 9:26 AM

Who the heck is actually calling plays at Clemson? Everyone. EVERYONE noticed - hey, thats the same lame offense they ran last year! Where is the Garrett Riley offense?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's 100% spot on.

4

Sep 7, 2023, 9:28 AM

"that didn't look like his offense..." Because it's not. As Dabo said when he hired Riley, "he's going to get in here and learn the Clemson offense..."

It made no sense to me then, and it clearly makes no sense to this team now.

I don't have the solution. But it appears neither does Dabo.

The offense started slow and still generated over 200 yards rushing and over 200 yards receiving. This is the only time since Dabo has been Coach that has happened and we lost. The offense will be good. Just have to put the ball in the end zone when we get there.

We still would have struggled to actually win the game even without the turnovers. How bad would we have lost the game if Duke had our talent and we had theirs?

You can’t say that at all lmfao, everyone misses the confidence/momentum those TDs would’ve brought. You have ZERO clue how the game would’ve turned out if we wouldn’t have made terrible errors

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you want to play that game, ok

1

Sep 7, 2023, 10:21 AM

Give us 3 scores, a TD for every turnover, thats 28. Take two TDs off their score just for the sake of your "confidence and momentum (lol)" We win 28-14. Against Duke. A team with 2 blue chip players on the entire roster.

A Win is a Win. I bet you would take that IF things worked that way. It’s for the better that we lost on the scoreboard that way instead of squeaking a win out of sloppy play by Clemson vs a Duke team that played their tails off to win. Those young men ain’t gonna learn near as much from a squeaky bad win vs an embarrassing Lose. My opinion: the majority of Clemson Players came out on that field with the mindset of “We got this. It’s just Duke.” And when Those players realized Duke brought some fight, the Clemson players on the field were “surprised”. As any player of any sport, you CAN NOT go on to the field/court with the Wrong Attitude.

It is still true. We all know psychology has a lot to do with mistakes breeding more mistakes. Players get down, and their heads get in the wrong place. This could have ended up in a weak win which in polling would have been chalked up to week one jitters instead of "elite football at Clemson being over."

As far as not knowing. One domino leads to the next one falling. They can either be positive or negative in direction. We had a series of errors that I am quite sure frigged with the heads of our players and they lost focus.

So just one play early one, perhaps the targeting call, resulting in a first down instead of a turnover could have changed everything from then on out. It's like time traveling. They always talk about how even the smallest change back a few steps in time changes the entire future which is why we have no idea what the outcome would be if even one of the early mistakes by Clemson had not happened.

If that was the case we would have won 28-7

Based on what?

1

Sep 7, 2023, 10:24 AM

You assume they only scored because we turned the ball over? They had 2 scoring plays alone that were ~40 yards.

Did your crystal ball tell you that we would have struggled to win without the turnovers? No way to know when you get into the what ifs. Maybe you should ask your crystal ball your other hypothetical question as well. Or maybe ask what would the score be if we had played the ‘72 Dolphins? Makes as much sense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Youre right

1

Sep 7, 2023, 10:25 AM

We were DOMINATING the game prior to the turnovers. Good grief.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Youre right

1

Sep 7, 2023, 10:31 AM

We had over 200 yards rushing and over 200 yards receiving. We haven’t lost a game since Dabo has been coach when we did that. We may not have been dominating but we did win every statistical category, just didn’t finish drives with points. Point is, there is no way to know what the outcome would have been without the turnovers.

Even Kirk Herbstreit knows.....

Offensive Line: Coached by former player with no previous experience.
Wide Receivers: Coached by former player with no previous experience.

Result: Both are in vast need of improvement which won't resume until qualified coaches are hired.

The season is most likely tanked. You don't fix this massive of an issue(s) in 2 weeks.

Cope now or cope later.

You sir are an idiot!!! The season is not not tanked and the Sky is not falling. It was a BAD outcome. The turnovers, obviously, killed us but come on it’s 1 game. I assume you have never had a messed up day when it seemed like everything went wrong!!!

Re: Even Kirk Herbstreit knows.....

I don't believe the "sky is falling". I do believe that it took massive fan/alumni/booster pressure and media outlet attention for Dabo to fire Streeter - just for the fans to later find out that it's Swinney calling the same garbage plays from his stale-@ss playbook.

ESPN sees it. FOX sees it. The whole d**m online world sees it. The fans live it.

This man makes 10+ million a year to keep his team at the top of the mountain. They just lost to an unranked DUKE. Even "everything going wrong" should have still relegated to a win when playing this historical caliber of opponent. He failed miserably and now his leadership is being questioned.

You might do well to just turn off the interwebs, grandpa.

We definitely could turn this around and wind up with a

great season. That will NOT happen if Dabo believes we just need to clean up a few mistakes. No, he has to realize our problems run much deeper, and are more fundamental.

Our offense sucks massively, and it's not a talent issue. A lot of teams with much less talent have obviously better offenses. That should be an outrage, and totally unacceptable at Clemson, especially after the last two seasons. Then there's the defense: slow, reactive instead of proacvtive, out of position, confused, arm tackling, etc.

Yeah, the turnovers were a killer, but turnovers and mistakes are NOT what's keeping us from being an elite team, nor is it a lack of talent.

Well gee, Captain Obvious....

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm feeling very uneasy...

Sep 7, 2023, 5:10 PM

...about the 2023 Tigers and beyond. If Dabo is actually saying or implying that things will be done his way only then I am extremely concerned and almost saddened. He may have lost his vision or is burned out. We will see in very short order...

Kirk clarifies what he thinks Dabo is saying toward the end of this clip. He's not saying Dabo has his own offense and that's the offense ( clemson offense ) we are going to run

He makes it clear that whatever offense is run is the Clemson offense. Team concept.

In other words there is no such thing as ( Rileys offense ).

Riley is running the offense and it's the Clemson offense

Ok, all he said is true and everyone knows it. At this point, i would take a 10-2 regular season in a heartbeat but im afraid it’s going to be 9-3 or even 8-4. Duke has a very good team…..but obviously FSU and ND are top tier teams and UNC is a very good team and Loiusville is no slouch team either.

Herbstreits overview is pretty right on. Let's pick up this conversation after the FSU game.
New Coach for the offense. Yall act like we should be playing with mid-season form. Everything is timing and timing was definitely off on a lot of the bad plays that really hurt.
It's not doom and gloom.
Hopefully tomorrow will give us a preview of what's to come.

Go Tigers!
