Tony Steward

Aug 16, 2012, 8:46 AM

I was thinking about the inconsistencies in what Dabo and Venables have said about Steward's redshirt. Perhaps there really isn't much of a plan to redshirt him, but Venables is using the possibility of it to further motivate Tony this camp. If Dabo says he ain't redshirting then I doubt he will, but if he is going to play I'm sure Venables wants him to step it up so he doesn't waste another year of eligibility as an ineffective backup. Probably what BV meant when he said, "I am pleased with the guys in front of him right now."

It seems to me after last year this year would just be repeating that same approach. Give the kid a year to redshirt and rehab and get into football shape. we tried the playing him a few months after approach last year. it didnt work out to the point he almost qualified for a medical. seems you should probably learn from that

I have this feeling that if Steward doesn't get the redshirt there is a good reason for it and he will play serious minutes over Wright at least and probably over Willard as well. I get this feeling he is third string because he does not know the defensive schemes yet and over the course of fall practice and maybe a game or two will figure it out and be a beast for us.

Tell me a linebacking corps of Steward, Anthony, and Townsend all starting sounds pretty darn good to me and would be scary to see all that speed on the field at one time. With Willard, Shuey, and BJ all backing up and playing quality minutes. :)

I take it on face value, actually.

Venables is a genuine person and I think if he feels Tony isn't 100% he doesn't want to endanger Tony's chances to go to the next level. I think he'd rather see him play at 100% next year and be the 1st round NFL prospect we all know he can be.

Screw Calford.

This bugs me more than anything else in fall camp

BV is your defensive coordinator, he's the expert, let his word be the last on this subject until its time to make a decision.

And please DO NOT just play him on special teams. He was not impressive to me last year on special teams.

I think a big key here is Tony's buy in to either scenario.***

My guess is that the redshirt question will linger into

the season. ACL reconstruction usually takes a year to rehab, but with minimally invasive procedures the inflammation and scarring can be greatly diminished, so every patient can be vastly different in how they heal.

Obviously he's not at 100% now, but would he be for the second half of the season? Don't know. A lot depends on Tony and his mind set, he's a competitor, he's going to want to play; he is the best judge of how his knee feels. Having rehabbed one, he knows the process. Being a year older and wiser, I think he would be able to give the coaches more valuable feedback on how much he thinks he can contribute. Either way, it will be a decision for Tony, the coaches, and the docs to make. If they all put his health first, the best decision will come from that.

I've had 3 knee surgeries, 2 of'em ACLs. I'm not a doc, but I've been in his situation on whether to play or not coming off of rehab.

Redshirt Him

And make sure he knows he's the starter for the next three years...

Give him to Batson to get back his explosiveness...

I think people are reading way too much in to what is said

Aug 16, 2012, 9:45 AM

in these post practice interviews. First off, Dabo is an optimist while Venables is more of a realist. At least that's my impression from watching both of these guys. Dabo is going to expect the best and that Steward will be able to play this season. Venables is just calling it like he sees it as of now.

So I really don't think it's near the issue that many are making it. I have full faith that both coaches will make the decision that is best for the player and the team WHEN THAT TIME COMES. They still have time to evaluate the situation and don't need to be rushing the decision.

Honestly, I find it refreshing to see different perspectives and that Dabo is not making his coaches simply be his puppets.
