Transfer Portal

I see so many posts here and other places about the transfer portal. While I'm not saying we shouldn't get guys out of the portal, I do think it's ridiculous to say that the W/L record this year was due to the lack of players from the transfer portal

everyone notices the successes of the portal, but just look across the state...they didn't qualify for a bowl game with a transfer portal QB that was supposed to be the "savior" for them

there are a lot of misses in the portal game and you also bring a lot of negativity with transfers. usually there's a bad reason for them wanting or needing to leave

I'm sure the responses will be that we will only get the good guys who fit our system, but isn't that the point? those guys didn't fit the system to start with, so why would they fit now?

I agree that there are potentially some guys who "fit" and I'd love to see them come in and contribute right away, but when the goal is to build and sustain a program, you can't do it through the portal and the risk/reward on them may not be worth it in the end.

I'd like to see 1 - 3 guys who are graduate transfers...guys who have proven themselves (possibly at smaller conferences/schools)

I just have this crazy belief that maybe we would have won more games if we had 3-4 better players from the portal.

The problem is, you can't just say 3-4 generic players. It has to be players who have the specific skill set we need, and it has to be players who were actually interested in coming here.

And 90% would have had a kicker on their portal wish list...

Unfortunately for us, when the portal was open, we did not need a kicker.

My view is more practical. We can't recruit for 2024 from HS because most everyone is taken. We need help in areas like the OL for 2024 and we have some guys leaving so it makes sense. We are already thin in the OL because we don't carry as many linemen as most of the other major programs. Since the portal is the only available avenue to fill immediate needs, why wouldn't we take advantage of it?

No but he was arguably their best player.

Probably 2nd best at worst. Where would they have been without him? Probably even worse!

Rattler made $2 Million this year in NIL deals to play this season to boot. Our D, sans a single portal player or NIL hot shot, shut him the freak down but good.

SCar now is in the position of having to go the portal route for a starting QB considering they aren't bringing them up on their own. What hot shot QB out of high school wants to join in that parade?

You make a great point in that regard (why would a high school player want to join a program like that). I said something similar about a month ago regarding the TP in general - i.e, why would a decent HS player want to go into a program that relies heavily on TP players who would get more snaps while he is working his butt off to learn & develope? Look at what’s happening at Colorado now in spite of Coach Prime: 2024 recruiting class ranked 30th and 3 decommits this week from the 2025 class. This TP portal stuff is gonna fizzle out once coaches figure out you might be able to build a TEAM via TP but you can’t build a PROGRAM that way

you are one of the few who understand s how important the portal is. It can be used but is overrated. One idiot posted about Miami and duke and how they used the portal, they're both 7-5. People talk about Florida state too, but really if it was for 6 year covid Jordan Travis, they would not be nearly as good. Remember, these are the same genius that said Wes must go in his first #### year,

Coleman was a difference maker for them this year and others were keys to their success. Travis doesn't have the same success without them and FSU isn't undefeated to this point.

It's not ridiculous at all to think that ANYBODY's W/L record.......

could be improved with better players.........whether that's 2-4 better players or 15-20........doesn't matter.

the portal should be used to UPGRADE current talent and BACKFILL portal exits so you're not "forever young"

You use Rattler as an example of "not working"..........it actually DID work. He was BY FAR their best player, their mistake was they didn't get ENOUGH talent upgrades.

I think it's safe to say we have a better W/L record with a 1-2 game-changing WRs (which wouldn't be much to overtake our current WR talent) & 1-2 OLINE talent upgrades.

i think you missed my point

you're referring to Rattler as a success from the portal b/c he's their best player.

my point isn't that you shouldn't get "a" player from the portal. My point is that you don't/cant build a program by leaning on the portal.

I think Rattler actually proves my point.

He WAS their best player and they still sucked!!!

Now they're probably going to have to get another transfer portal QB and likely another and another...

The way to build a program and sustain a top program is to recruit out of HS at a high level.

You can cherry pick a guy here or there and in unique circumstances but as some have noted, EVERYTHING needs to line up for it to work

The time and energy you spend making sure of a guy would be better spent (IMO) on recruiting future guys out of HS.

Sure there are times when a portal guy makes sense, but the overall philosophy shouldn't be to hammer the portal

For the portal to "work"

Several things must align.

First, a willingness to use it.

Then, you must have available scholarships in hand. This might come from transfers out, graduation, NFL declarations, injury/retirement, or you run off players or pull scholarships.

With the available players in the portal, you need to identify those whom you want to make offers to. Clearly, you also expect them to be able to fill a need on the team to make it worth using a scholarship. If you have holes to fill, you obviously want to try to find the best players in the portal to fill them, but you also want to be sure (or at least believe) that they will fit in the scheme and the program.

Bear in mind that a vast majority of the players in the portal are transferring because they are not able to compete for a starting role on their current team. Certainly some leave programs for other reasons, but a desire for more playing time (exposure) is the driving force for most guys in the portal. The takeaway there is that they are, by and large, second-string players where they are. Finding the "gems" ain't easy.

Once you make an offer to a player, you have to hope they accept it. NIL cash may come into play, and players may feel like some other program that ALSO has needs will be a better fit for them, a better opportunity, or simply pays better, depending on what motivates a player.

It cracks me up that some people think the portal is like a Chinese restaurant, "I'll take that OL, and gimme two WRs...hey, you got any linebackers in there, yeah, I'll take one of those, too."

None of this is to say that Dabo should refuse to use the portal, nor that the portal is always bad, and there are clearly examples of teams using the portal to upgrade. But the portal ain't a panacea of good times either, and it's not really any easier to navigate the portal than it is to find and sign the high-caliber recruits out of high-school.

We got Junior and Community College transfers in the Danny Ford era. There's no reason we can take 2-3 per year as needed to maintain or upgrade positions.
