T's and P's for Friend of Mine
Aug 17, 2022, 7:56 AM

Clearly I'm going to be as vague about this as possible...
Yesterday a good friend of mine - friends since elementary/middle school - a regular at my house growing up, etc. A guy that I still see from time to time and talk to...
He's married with 2 or 3 little rugrats. His B.I.L. is apparently a nutcase and had been threatening the wife (B.I.L.'s sister) for some time. Buddy had the house decked out with security cameras as a precaution, I suppose.
He left for work yesterday just before 5am, and apparently the B.I.L. was stalking them out. Once Buddy left for work, the B.I.L. showed up to the house in full tactical gear, multiple weapons, body armor, etc. and tried to break into the house.
Buddy sees it on the cameras, calls 911, and races back home. He beats the cops to his house. By this time, B.I.L. has broken into his house, where his wife and kids are.
Fighting ensues. My buddy is shot in the arm twice and the B.I.L. is killed. Buddy is in the hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries.
Dude is a hero and saved his family's life. We could all hope to be so brave and competent in that horrible situation! Regardless, it's still a tragedy. He's one of those guys that everybody loves. Mild mannered, funny, all of our moms, dads, brothers, sisters, wife's always talk about how great of a dude he is... he definitely didn't ask to be put into this shitty situation.
Prayers for the family, my buddy. The emotional and mental toll that it takes on all of them is going to be tremendous... even after he physically recovers.

speaks for itself, but just to confirm...your buddy shot and killed the BIL?
Other than Buddy's injuries, that's got to be about the best outcome that could have been hoped for after a nut breaks into your house with your wife and kids inside.

I understand that he returned fire after being shot twice by BIL who was intent on killing him, his wife, and his kids.

What would drive an adult male to that level of mad

at his sister? That's a weird one. People do dumb shit all the time when it comes to spouses/lovers/etc., but a sibling and her family? THAT level of mad?
Or maybe just some exceptional crazy that had to be directed at something.

It happens more than one might imagine. My wife and our extended family have been threatened in writing very explicitly by someone in my wife's family.
Multiple family members took the transcripts of the rambling extensive threats to the police. The response by the police was extremely underwhelming. They didn't even bother to pay this person a visit to check on his mental status.
I was told to be vigilant. That was so helpful. The cop asked if I had a weapon.
So now, while I was always prepared to defend my family, I am now carrying a concealed weapon in certain locations and now keep a weapon both upstairs and downstairs while making sure it is safely secured but very quickly accessible.
It's not a good place to be and this person blames everyone for his sorry choices and existence rather than taking a look in the mirror.
I hope I never have to do what your friend had to do but I've already played this out in my mind and if this guy ever threatens my family, I have already decided to take immediate action to end this.
Mental illness is sometimes very scary and I have been totally unimpressed with mental health care or lack of here.

I know her and dead brother, both went to my church growing up. He was always a little off, but certainly didn’t realize he’d gone that crazy. Any speculation as to why MS was breaking in? Was he trying to kill his sister?

Buddy... so fairly reliable).
MS had been threatening to kill sister for "a while". Enough that they put up cameras around the house and started carrying. How long is "a while"? I don't know. Why... as in... what's the beef? Don't know.
So he showed up in tactical gear, body armor, guns, and tried three doors before finally gaining entry, AND it sure seems like he premeditated it by waiting for the husband to leave for work.
From what I know, I think the safe assumption that he was there to kill the sister and/or everybody else in the house.
Like I said, I know the husband really well. I know the wife(sister) through him, and talked to her maybe a 5-10 time per year, so we're more just acquaintances. I didn't even know whether or not she had a brother, so I definitely didn't know him at all.

Crazy. I think their father died when they were young if I remember correctly. Tragic, no explanation for why except that he totally lost his marbles, she was always a super sweet straight laced church girl.
