Dilemma with the ACC

Thinking more about this Clemson and FSU situation, if the ACC eventually decides to pay Clemson and FSU larger percentages, then that means money is being taken from teams like NC State, Louisville, etc.
These teams are almost basically irrelevant in the national picture, but by decreasing their money, it just makes them all worse.
When those teams lose money, they’re going to start losing even more, and Clemson will then be stuck in a conference that’s pretty much a Group of 5 conference. Just think about GT football with even less money!
The only solution here is to get our ##### out.

Most of these crap ACC teams with no football fan support have dug their own graves at this point. They’ve had decades to get relevant and haven’t. It’s all about looking out for #1 at this point.

CASDM Clemson and FSU ALSO duh their own grave

By signing that ridiculous Grant of Rights for twenty years. Never sign a money deal for that long. Clemson had no choice to be stuck in a conference that will continue to bring them down. By 2036 Clemson and FSU might be considered on the same level as Appalachian State and East Carolina is now.

You may be right. I guess time will tell. I’m not convinced Clemson wants to go to the Semi-pro league that is coming. I’ve really seen nothing from the University leadership thats been proactive about resolving the million pound elephant in the room - $EC and BIG revenue gap. Only token comments. Maybe they are happy staying student athlete focused. It’s hard to know for sure if you aren’t behind the scene.

FWIW, the ACC is still ahead of the Big-12 in per-team revenue after their new deal and we will remain ahead of the Pac-12.
While I support uneven revenue distribution as a short term improvement of the situation, this is the kind of thing that has broken up other conferences.
We aren't getting out of the GOR. We don't know that the SEC would want us.
See my Hindsight is 20/20 post.

What happens if they eliminate the ACC from automatic qualification in the CFP?
Guess we’ll just stay in the GOR then.
Come on now

The six highest ranked conference champions will automatically qualify, along with the six next highest ranked teams, for the expanded playoff. If the ACC can't produce one of the six highest ranked conference champions (when we are the third highest revenue conference champion) we have bigger problems to worry about!

As another poster said, there is no automatic qualification to the CFP. The six highest ranked conference champions for that particular year get an automatic bid to the CFP for that year, but no specific conference has a guaranteed automatic bid.

Almost wish they could do away with conferences at this

point. They've screwed up the conference model with the TV money. Some conferences get more than others which widens the gap for the have's and have nots in college football. And with Tex and Okla goign to the Have's it'll only get wider. I'd rather it just be a large pool of regional opponents and that way everyone is in the same pool. But teams in the ACC can't compete long term with the SEC b/c the money that pours into that conference through TV deals. Its just not going to happen. UT and Okla saw it and did something about it. We didn't. We'll be big fish in a small pond until something structurally changes.

2 or 4 big "conferences" with several divisions in each. Division winners play off for a "super bowl".

Don't think they will ever have an uneven pay plan in football. If so, they would have to do in every sport. Football would be our only high pay sport except for maybe ladies softball.

Football is where most of the money is anyway. I'm sure Duke and UNC bring in money with basketball, but not anywhere close to the money from football. None of the other sports would even register in terms of having an impact on revenue sharing.

Yes this article just reinforces my point about what unequal revenue share would do.
“If Miami, FSU, and Clemson left the ACC, the conference would rank dead last amongst the power conferences and it would fall below even The American.”
Also, is Clemson being as outspoken and forthcoming about this as FSU seems to be?? I’m seeing most of this news being about FSU and their AD, but haven’t seen much about anybody at Clemson specifically. Even though the article stated Clemson has been negotiating.

Check out the great link in this thread: We're 14th in the country in revenues (without scanning, I assume it is only public universities) and third in the conferences, behind Virginia and FSU. The #2 school in sports revenues is Texas (from neither the B1G or SEC), and media rights are only our third biggest revenue source in sports, behind donations and ticket sales. https://www.tigernet.com/clemson-forum/thread/clemson-athletics-revenue-2021-22-2238181?tstart=0

We can't afford to bid against NBC. ND also collect a cut of their bowl games which is not shared with anyone. When ND makes the PO once it earns a conference share of the big bucks.
Anyone expecting ND to join any conference thinks the people who run ND never made it to the third grade.

Wouldn’t the other ACC teams have to agree to take less? If forced upon them, it would open the door to them possibly getting out of the GOR and/or ACC.

Uneven revenue sharing is why Mizzou and Texas A&M bolted the Big12. If the ACC does uneven revenue sharing you can bet behind the scenes UNCheat, Duke, and UVA will work to get in the Big10 despite the cost.

Big 10 would never take Duke. They would have interest in UVA, UNC, GT and FSU. I’m not saying that they would take those 4, but they would have interest. Possibly Clemson too, but not sure on that one.

to splitting the conference and having the other members break the GOR.
None of this is going to end well for most of the conference. Let's just hope we can make it out of the mess.

I don't think they're going to "go" anywhere. But I also don't think they're going to say "yeah, we should definitely give FSU and Clemson more money at our expense." If Clemson and FSU continue to stir that pot, eventually someone will say fine, if we make it easier for you to leave, will you shut up and leave?

As I understand it, the buyout is $120M and the teams still don't own their media rights until 2036. You're going to be hard pressed to find a conference that wants a team that they can't profit from/control their TV appearances. I suspect Clemson, UNC and FSU are looking over the agreements with a fine tooth comb to find a way out or even collapsing the ACC and respawning as a different conference. The ACC contract is terrible and because of how bad it is the teams struggle to recruit in order to make the ACC strong enough to get a decent contract.

I highly doubt the GOR is rock solid. Few things in contracts are. Even if the wording is done well, one could argue that Clemson and FSU have a suit against the ACC for fiduciary mismanagement.
I honestly believe this will end up in a settlement, as the ACC is at risk and the safer alternative is to settle.
