The Florida A&M head coach has an offer from Duke, but it's not a foregone conclusion he'll leave.

New Duke head coach Manny Diaz has offered Florida A&M head coach Willie Simmons his running backs coach job in Durham, FootballScoop sources can confirm.

However, sources told FootballScoop Friday that Florida A&M has asked Simmons for the weekend to put together a contract competitive enough to keep him.

Simmons is one of the most successful coaches in FCS, and FAMU would very much like to keep him.

Exactly. And at Duke?

Leaving for Alabama or Texas where you can call your shot to a respectable FBS program makes sense.

To come to Duke, where they will eventually return to mediocrity at best, seems like a career killer.

Do well in FCS, and in a few years you can name your price at a FBS like Brian Kelly did (if you can make that move from D2, 1-AA isn't a stretch at all).

I was thinking the same. I thought it would have said the offensive coordinator job.

Doesn't seem like being a head coach at an HBCU is the best place to move up the head coaching ladder. Deion Sanders was a truly special exception.
