Venables.....

12

Oct 23, 2023, 2:27 PM

I am proud of his success and he is certainly missed. I miss his fire and passion. I also loved some of his memorable sayings like "nut cutting time" and "Jimmy Greenbeans". He is beyond the shadow of a doubt the greatest assistant coach we have ever had at Clemson.
Having said that, look at the circumstances in which he came to Clemson and how he got acclimated to Clemson. He wasn't demoted but Stoops made him Co-Defensive Coordinator when he brought his brother back in to Oklahoma. I would take that as a demotion. Oklahoma could've brought him back before, when they brought in Lincoln Riley. I'm glad they did him that way because that meant we keep him longer.
Many times in interviews he was questioned if he'd ever want to be a head coach and said he was happy at Clemson. He certainly had opportunities at other places. When he was finally hired at Oklahoma I was happy for him.
Those now insinuating that Venables was the ONLY reason we had the great run and saying that Dabo had nothing to do with that just sound silly. Look no further than some of the things that Coach Venables himself said and did once he got back to OU that clearly reflected Coach Swinney's influence.
Furthermore, the ONLY way Venables is coming back here is if he does a bad job and Oklahoma runs him off (I don't think he will--he will retire there). Then, the same people who are giving him all of the credit will be saying why did we hire a coach that another team ran off?

Coach Swinney has proven time and again that he fixes things that are wrong with the program. He will fix this as well. He's very efficient in fixing things that he has direct control over. In this case, I believe that Coach Swinney's philosophy of Serving his players hearts instead of their talents is in direct conflict with the way money and greed has sewn its way into the sport we all love(d) called college football. This is something he doesn't have direct control over and will not be as quick to adapt, but adapt he will. I have plenty of patience and belief in our future College Football Hall of Fame Head Coach to do so in his own time schedule.

I guess the 2011 ACC Championship didn't happen. Venables came to Clemson as the same person he was at OK and OK did not win any championships while he was there.

Time to accept who Clemson is and support them rather than bashing the present with the past.

Um, yes he did.

2000 national champs, and 7 Big 12 championships.

Years in the making and could’ve been fixed with proper action before the slide got so bad. Refusing to use the portal and his friends and family hiring plan has been a disaster.

"Dabo can't win without a world class QB"
"Dabo can't win without a world class Defensive Line"
"Dabo can't win without Venables"

It seems some don't realize that the Head Coach is the CEO of the program. He's tasked with making the right hires, recruiting the right players and building a system that develops everyone within that system. Show me Venable Natty when he was DC at Oklahoma.

Is there any possibility that Venables was playing both sides while he was here. Yeah sure he was scheming against the other teams offense, but any chance BV took a look at opposing defenses as well and said hey if I were an offensive guy I would call this play or that play?

Based on everything I see currently guarantee BV wins a Natty before Clemson even makes it back to the playoffs.

If everyone would just open both eyes, in the light of day, and look at our roster in the undefeated Championship year of 2018 and compare this year's roster to that team, it would very easy to see that we just do not have the horses we used to have. Every team we play sees it, every broadcaster and writer, who has been around, sees it and we should to. We have very good players, but not the really good and in some cases, great players we had before.

There is nothing wrong with Dabo and he did not forget how to coach after Trevor and ETN left. Our recruiting has been very good if you look at rankings, but now with the Portal, that is not all there is to look at. There may very well be something wrong with the chemistry and togetherness of this team but we don't get to know that. If our players have the character that they are supposed to have, we will get better. If the numbers allow, Dabo will look for help in the Portal but we have to convince the players to come to Clemson and not one of the 25 or 30 other schools that are pushing us out. Huge last 5 games and huge next 5 months to see if we can find some help.

We do not have the talent now that we did then. If we do have the same talent then we must have worse coaching.

Can you give an example of that post 2016?

Board of Trustees vision----Dabo's vision
1980's lockerrooms---WEZ---Football Facility
Napier----Chad Morris
Chad Morris---Scott and Elliot (2 National Championships)
Steele----Venables
The above examples were all upgrades when you've been at the top and won 2 national championships and finally lose staff to promotions, you don't always have an upgrade with what follows so he will fix it.

On a smaller scale, look at how he handled things like the following player issues:
Summer 2012 (before all the Natty's) Sammy Watkins (our leading superstar receiver) gets arrested. All the opposing message boards and national media assumes he will be suspended a quarter or a half or against a later lesser opponent. Knowing it might cost them the game against Auburn in opener, what does Dabo do? He served Sammy's heart instead of his talents and suspended him for the whole game. Sammy was a model citizen the rest of his time at Clemson.
Teasedall went rouge in the ACC Championship and calls his own fake punt. Dabo chews him a new one. In the next game in the CFP Teasedall executes perfect pass for first down in a tight ball game against Oklahoma. He fixed the problem.

Venables will be lucky to last at OU IMO. Time will tell. He's catching some

Oct 23, 2023, 4:16 PM

breaks this year after a really bad year last year. He's fortunate to beat UT and win a couple close one against UCF because he ended last season with the fans disgusted. D is still 54th in the country right now. Schedule is easy for him this year but he's about to head to the SEC and OU isn't ready. They were exposed over and over in the playoffs and that was with better personnel than they have at the moment. The fans there will not give him time for the program to not only improve personnel wise but also adjust to the grind of the SEC. + adjusting to being a head coach.

In our 2016 NC run we had 8 games decided by 7 points or less. We loss only 1 of those to Pitt. Good teams find ways to win the close ones...

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

sure they do - but when you are 54th in the country in D, you aren't going far

Oct 23, 2023, 4:49 PM

come post-season even if you continue with the luck

And yes, we did win a bunch of close ones. Got off to a sluggish start but that was talented team against the toughest schedule we've had in the last 7-8 years(only this year comes close). OU isn't facing a difficult schedule. They are catching another break this week with Daniels still questionable having missed the last 3 games.

My point to Brad on the call in show this morning was that our success was the magic combination of Venables drive and determination and commitment to succeed at the cost of anything coupled with Dabo’s endless optimism and enthusiasm. Working that hard and expecting that much of guys will wear them down without Dabos energy, and likewise, we can be all happy and just thankful for the opportunity and sunshine but at some point, a mean streak has to take over and we have to destroy teams-that element came from Brent. I know there are other paths to success, and we will find one, but we had one that worked until the Sheriff left town-now we have the mayor still working hard, but his enforcer is gone.
