I'm so sick about hearing about the "black community"
May 1, 2015, 2:24 PM

And the "white community". Black people shouldn't be some group with their own interests, and neither are white people.
Things will not change when the "black community" decides to do something, or the government decides to do something. Change will happen when one person decides to do right, then another person does, then together their home decides to, then a group of homes. It doesn't start with the "community"...it ends with the "community". It starts with individuals.
John Doe didn't set fire to the CVS because his community is being held down. He set fire to the CVS because he doesn't have the character not to. The next John Doe in line needs to put down the gasoline and match, go home, and write his Congressman, study and graduate. Then he needs to find a woman who did the same thing and marry her. Then they need to have children whom they teach to do the same thing. Then the Doe family needs to reach out to others in their neighborhood, encouraging them to make individual decisions to be a positive force.
No government program, police reform, or grand jury decision is going to make John drop the match.

The things I see all the time about "we" or "they" referring to a racial divide just bothers me. How about "I"? What am "I" going to do to make a difference? There will never be racial harmony until we stop dividing by race.

I'm curious as to what environment you were born into? You don't have to get too detailed. Just a roundabout picture of the wealth and family status you had from age 0 to 18.

Sounds like, despite finances, you had a pretty solid family for support and moral understanding. But I'm sure, like most teenage boys, there were times you made some pretty dumb decisions. Scientists have proven that teens don't understand or factor in risk the way we adults do. They instead see more emphasis in the reward.
Imagine a teenage boy born into a poor neighborhood with only a mother who is never home because she works two jobs, and the boy's only source for male role models are older drug dealers (who probably have cash on hand) or gang members (in which the boy may feel he has to make a choice to join in order to stay alive).
Was that a situation you had to face?

What we need is for individuals to decide to live their life in such a way that their children will not be in those situations. The cycle stops with one person's decision to rise above those circumstances.

Again, explain this reasoning to a 14 or 15 year old

Who makes the wrong choice because that's all he has around him.
If he's lucky enough to stay alive or out of jail by the time he grows up enough to make the right decisions, then hopefully he'll do it.

Yes, it's hard.
But yes, it's the path to an improved community.
I think this constant re-assurance that it is okay if they make bad choices because of their environment might do more harm than good.

better to preach the right message, one of responsibility and accountability, instead of one of victimhood and blame. People need to know the truth, that if they make better choices, which they can in most cases, they will have better outcomes and their children and grandchildren will have much better lives because of it. Instead, the message that gets through is that the deck is stacked against them and somebody else will have to fix it for them.

My Dad was the first person in his family tree to graduate
May 1, 2015, 3:44 PM

From college. I was the second. My older sister was third, my younger sister was fourth. All of us got full academic rides to college. My mother has never had a job in her life, except for taking care of us rugrats. My Dad never made more than $25,000 a year while we were at home. We didn't have much growing up, but all of us will be able to provide more for our children than we got, because we were taught to do our best.

Speaking of Community....

Anyone watching the new season on Yahoo!? Pretty good stuff, yet still feels off. I'm pretty sure this will be its final season. #sixseasons...
Also, if you enjoy Community (or the Office/Parks&Rec) Yahoo also has a show called "Other Space" that's very much worth watching. It's only 8 episodes (all already viewable) and has Lily from the AT&T commercials if any of you pervs crush on the bedazzling customer rep.

Individuals, regardless of skin color, must change. I must change. When a group of individuals have done that...voila! A community is changed.

I only disagree in one way. We have created these housing areas which were a racist move to begin with but only serve as a deterrent to self development. These huge areas of mostly minority people are places where good culture goes to die. A culture of doing good for good's sake quickly evaporates in these things because there is little reason to admire the adults who exhibit those behaviors.
Until we uncreate these abominations, we will continue to see divisions between people based on race because the cuntures are so different and thus a division in the minds of the politically motivated. We all know what that breeds.
But, if we did get rid of them, I believe we would see individuals from all races and genders making much better decisions AND more patience and desire to understand the actions of others when they did not understand. Just my 2 cents.
