artificial noisemakers. I was at the game in the 80s as a kid when the megaphones were used. I thought they just numbed the sound and didn't really increase the noise. If I remember correctly people stopped using them by the end of the 1st qtr.

How is that a noisemaker? It's an amplifier, not maker.***

a wrapping paper tube when you were a kid. It numbs the sound. No replacement for yelling and screaming your butt off. Now if they were real megaphones where the volume could be turned up that's another story.

Not necessarily true.

Acoustic megaphones can help direct sound waves more precisely than screaming into open air.
It's not about it amplifying your voice, but more about everyone directing their voices at the same place.

It will be unbearable...
"Megaphone Concentrates Sound
When a speaker speaks into a megaphone, however, the conical shape of the device captures the air vibrations and prevents them from scattering. As the vibrations travel through the megaphone, they are protected from interference by other sound sources (such as other people talking or yelling). The sounds exit the megaphone as a tightly packed, concentrated collection of air vibrations that are able to be travel greater distances without being dispersed or absorbed by nearby items. While a listener who is standing or sitting beside someone using a megaphone may not hear the speaker as clearly as if he were not using the device, someone in the path of the megaphone's projection, that is, someone who receives the concentrated collection of air vibrations, interprets the sound as much louder than if the megaphone were not used."

Oddly enough, the megaphones will make the stadium seem more

quiet to the fans. BUT, it will make it seem MUCH louder when 80,000 yelling people direct their megaphones towards the teams at the line of scrimmage.
Just keep this in mind when you yell into them. Don't be disappointed when you think the stadium is louder without them because it IS for the fans when the noise is dispersed. BUT for the teams on the field, with the noise channeled towards them, it will be much louder than without them.

they're not amplifying sound, but directing sound waves.

It's the same principle. It is a means to direct the sound toward the field.
