Watching an old Shell's Wonderful World of Golf with Byron Nelson vs Gene

Littler at Pine Valley, New Jersey. Way back in the wooden wood era, but both of them past their prime.

WOW, is there a difference in course setup these days vs back then. The FAIRWAYS grass was so high, as well as the collars around the greens, it looked like modern rough. No wonder players drive it longer now, if for no other reason than the increased roll available.

Of course, equipment AND player conditioning have all improved since then, as well. It really was a different game back then. A 300 yard drive was uncommon, indeed. Makes some of the prodigious distances that Nicklaus fellow was hitting it even more impressive.

:)

Saw that episode a couple of nights ago. The clubs and the balls were a lot different back then also.

I love watching some of these old Shell World of Golf when I can. Its totally a window back to a bygone era. Something just really great about them. There wasnt alot of the golf broadcasts

Don't watch as many of these as I'd like.

I sat in the board room at the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda and watched a 16mm film of the match between rookie Mason Rudolph, whom I knew, and Sam Snead, that took place on their golf course. Rudolph beat Snead and later when Snead’s golf pro buddies kidded him about losing to a rookie, Snead claimed that half way through the match he discovered he had more than 14 clubs, so after that he just didn’t try. In the film, the Bermuda greens were so slow that they had to kill the ball to get it near the hole and it would just stop like it hit a wall. I think this was around 1958, but may have been a little earlier.

....long before I started working for Shell. They always had the reputation of being the greatest advertising Shell ever had.
