Well, someone asked for evidence

From a Facebook post by Ed Piotrowski:

Recently, a Gervais’ beaked whale, a very rare species of whale that lives 300 miles+ offshore, was found alive on the beach in Emerald Isle, NC late last month. Shortly after being found, the animal died. The next day a necropsy was performed by multiple highly trained individuals and scientists. The cause of death? A balloon.

Marine scientists and many marine mammal teams say released balloons "can cause pain, suffering, and ultimately the death of many wild animals.” In this case, a crumpled-up plastic balloon obstructed the gastrointestinal tract leading to the whale's death.

looks more like a "votive candle" balloon, or a distorted hospital IV bag.

Is there any evidence that a balloon made it from Clemson to the ocean and killed an animal? Seems like a far-fetched idea.

Definitely not. We dont need a balloon anyway. We dont even need fireworks in this country. Lasers do everything we need. The are amazing. Drones as well. No need to scare or hurt animals, no fires, no injuries, and looks better anyway.

I am ok either way but not a fan of making up a reason for something which a reach (at best) just to justify a decision. If the ballons are too expensive or too much trouble or a local nuisance then just say so and move on.

And some vets with PTSD.

I know a vet that doesn’t go to our games because we have fireworks (and the cannon)…he gets really freaked out.

The solution to the whole problem is to just make the balloons out of sea turtle intestines. That way it's biodegradable and a natural food source for rare species of whales and such.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Surely there is a balloon that is biodegradable that

We could use? Our University can't think of an idea to solve this problem while also bringing back a huge part of our tradition of running down the hill?

Come on...there has to be a better solution than the typical Leftist choice of less spectacle, less fun with no balloons.

Somebody may have found one dead whale with a balloon in its throat, but a single sperm whale will eat up to 1.5 tons of squids and sharks PER DAY.

Not saying we should be bull-headed and use balloons just to spite animals, just saying there are INCREDIBLE numbers of organisms in the oceans and INCREDIBLE numbers of them die every day. Stories like these would have you believe a one-off balloon discovery is tantamount to massive whale population slaughter, but it’s simply not the case.

India and China dump an amount of trash into the oceans every day that would make Willy B blush.

The balloons that are harmful are the Mylar balloons with the strings. The balloons we used would shred apart in the atmosphere and degrade at the same rate as an oak leaf. It still upsets me we ever talked with the protestors instead of just ignoring them since they didn’t know what they were talking about.

Its the way or the world these days. Some nut sack chooses to be offended by something and we simply give in instead of having a discussion to determine if the issue is real.

After all these years we finally have evidence that a balloon from somewhere on earth was swallowed by an animal, and then died. I wonder if any animals have died from eating anything else? Balloons have to be the biggest problem... eradicate them now!!!
