He came up with a lot of really interesting political theory, especially around the issue of minority rights (in his case, the rights of southerners as a regional minority) in a democracy. He also thought slavery was a good thing.

If that flag doesn't come down, I predict there will be some riots here. And I imagine after that they'll be calling for anyhing to do with Calhoun to be wiped clean as well.
