I took at look at the NCAAT Round 1/2 game results as related to NET. Just for shts and giggles. Here's what I found:
Round 1
Record by higher NET rated team: 22-10
Biggest upsets (both SEC): Oakland (126) over Kentucky (18), Yale (83) over Auburn (5)
NET of winning teams: Range 1-126, Median 21.5, Mean 30.9
NET of losing teams: Range 5-290, Median 53.5, Mean 87.6
Round 2
Record by higher NET rated team: 15-1
Clemson was the only team to pull a NET-upset in R2.
NET of winning teams: Range 1-63, Median 9.5, Mean 13.9
NET of losing teams: Range 15-126, Median 44.5, Mean 47.9
The two lowest-NET-rated teams left are both ACC - NCSU & Clemson

Iowa St (6) vs Illinois (13); Iowa St -1.5
UNC (8) vs Alabama (9); UNC -3.5
Arizona (4) vs Clemson (35); Arizona -7.5
Houston (1) vs Duke (10); Houston -4.5
Marquette (14) vs NC State (63); Marquette -6.5
Purdue (3) vs Gonzaga (17); Purdue -5.5
Tennessee (7) vs Creighton (11); Tennessee -2.5
The higher-NET-rated team is also favored in Vegas in all 8 games.

Of the remaining teams:
11 of the top 12 NET rated teams are still alive. The only outlier is Auburn.
14 of the remaining 16 teams are in the NET top-20. One of the missing teams - Kansas (NET 19) - was beaten by Gonzaga (NET 17) in R2.
The 2 non-top 20 teams are Clemson (35) and NCSU (63).
The NET has many flaws. Mainly, it overly-rewards teams too early in the season and that then carries through into falsely representing conference strength.
However, it has pretty successfully projected the sweet 16 (I know that is not its intended purpose).

The question is how many teams were left out because of poorer Net ratings that should have been in the first round replacing some of the overrated teams that got beat? My guess is half a dozen or so.

Pitt lost to the worst team in the SEC. They lost to Missouri team that went 0-18 this season. Wake Forest just lost to Georgia, again. They were swept by SEC teams that didn’t make the tourney. Lots of teams could beat anyone on the right day. But Wake and Pitt were left out for good reason.
