What Football Programs Have Been Enhanced By Changing Conferences?

I was listening to a sports talk show this morning and the question of how many schools football programs were enhanced by switching conferences? This isn't about making more money or the improvement of basketball and the non-revenue sports...just about football. Aside from making more money I can't think of many schools that improved their football program on the field. Maybe Missouri a little?

What do any of you have on this topic?

Maybe Texas A&M going from the big 12 to the SEC? I’m not caught up their history and I know recently they have been underwhelming, but I know they had a few good years there in the past, maybe that was just the Manziel factor.

Theyve been middling at best though. Sumlin had a nice run, but since

then it’s been mediocre.

So much money. What does it do again?

You cannot look at past data because things are different now. Clemson has already stated that things need to change or the football program is in trouble after 2026.

Agreed. The money increase for new members Texas, OU, USC, UCLA. Washington and Oregon is like no other increase before. Going to have to wait and see on those.

Washington and Oregon are only getting a partial share for the first 3-4 years

it's about NIL now.

Let me ask you this?

Lets say the AFL and NFL owners were each given 100 mil in 1966.

The NFL owners spent their 100 mil on building fancy new stadiums and facilities. The AFL spent their money on players.

Do you think the NFL would exist today ?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting we need to stay in the ACC. I agree the money issue is a the elephant in the room with Clemson's long term survivability. The question caught me off guard because I can't really think of programs that got better when jumping conferences.

Louisville is another possibility that you could say improved after joining the ACC..

Hard to say if one caused the other, but Florida St. was an independent prior to joining the ACC. As was GA Tech I believe. I would say Arkansas benefitted from leaving the SW Conference back in the day.
They were the only school in the conference that wasn't in the state of Texas. Certainly would have improved their recruiting prospects. The case could be made for Syracuse. While a decent program, the Big East was nothing for football. The same could be said for Louisville or VA Tech, moments of greatness, but no so much lately.

Arkansas did not...they lost their *ss, A&M stunk after switching...Nebraska took one in the corn...Colorado really advanced...really nobody...only FSWTC moving to the ACC has shown benefit and those horsemeat eaters want out...they can play on the SEC network historical programs about SEC & natties after they move...haha!

My fave still remains Mizzou. When they joined the SEC everyone was saying it would take them years to compete and they went and won the SEC East and made the SECCG in their first two seasons.

Actually Missouri went 2-6 in conference their first year in the SEC and finished 5th in the East. Last year they had their first winning conference record since 2014.

A better example is probably Va Tech (who someone mentioned earlier). They were good-but-not-great their last 3 years or so in the very weak Big East (very similar record as Missouri prior to SEC), but won the ACC their first year and followed it up by winning it 4 of their first 7 years, as well as winning their Division 6 of their first 8 years in the ACC. By far their most successful extended run in their history.

Another example is Boston College. They won their division their first year in the ACC, and 3 of their first 4 years, after years of mediocrity in the Big East. Those first 4 years in the ACC remain their best 4-year stretch in program history.

They’ve all benefited financially which is what’s at stake here

Went from FCS to FBS Sunbelt. There was lots of resistance them doing that ... "going to get killed", no one will come to game. Complete opposite.

Sadly, those in charge are only concerned with money, so on the field doesn't

Probably depends on what is meant by "enhanced"...

I think Missouri, Texas A&M and Arkansas all have benefitted financially from the SEC. But they have a combined zero football championships in the SEC.

Georgia Tech benefitted from joining the ACC from a competitive and money standpoint back in the day.

I think FSU benefitted greatly from the ACC back in the day.

I think moving to the ACC benefitted Virginia Tech as well.

But times change, and sometimes you have to change with it.

I wouldn't say always successful but Marshall has jumped around a lot conference wise:

Conference Sun Belt Conference now
Division East

Past conferences
WVIAC (1925–1932)
Buckeye (1933–1938)
OVC (1948–1951)
MAC (1954–1968, 1997–2004)
SoCon (1977–1996)
C-USA (2005–2021)

FSU, obviously.

Technically, Independent is not a conference, but joining the ACC certainly was a huge benefit to the program. (And, switching from the Metro to the ACC certainly helped the other sports as well.)
