Deer Jounge Presbyterians

Mar 18, 2015, 9:11 AM

Yall switching teams anytime soon? We have a few who have left our church because of this.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/17/us/presbyterian-church-gay-marriage/index.html

Presbyterian group changes marriage definition to include same-sex couples
By Holly Yan, CNN

(CNN)The country's largest Presbyterian denomination has changed its definition of marriage to include gay couples -- though not explicitly.

Presbyterian Church (USA) approved an amendment to its constitution after most of its 171 presbyteries -- or governing bodies -- voted for it, PC (USA) said Tuesday.

Before, the definition said marriage was between "a man and a woman."

The new definition says, in part, that "marriage involves a unique commitment between two people, traditionally a man and a woman, to love and support each other for the rest of their lives."

Already, PC (USA) ministers can perform same-sex marriages in states where such marriages are legal, the group said. But no teaching elder or session can be forced to conduct same-sex marriage ceremonies if they do not believe they are appropriate.

Not all members supported the decision.

In a post on PC (USA)'s website, Jean and Robert Gorney accused the church of going against the Bible and threatened to leave.

"We are not to change the Bible," their post said. "I don't care who disagrees."

But the Covenant Network of Presbyterians, which says it supports "a fully inclusive church," welcomed the news Tuesday night.

"The change aligns the church's constitution with a reality that has long been true: Both same-gender and opposite-gender couples have been living in relationships that demonstrate covenant faithfulness, shared discipleship and mutual love," the group said.

"We are also aware that the discussion has been a difficult one for many, and that some will feel a deep sense of pain over this decision. The Covenant Network is committed to fostering healthy dialogue and working with those who hold a view different from ours, seeking opportunities for us to model an authentic and productive unity."

The amendment will take effect on June 21.

is a Presbyterian minister (PCA), and he does not approve of the theological liberalism of PCUSA. He is also 82 years old, and doesn't accept change, even if it doesn't involve him or his church.

Personally, I don't think the change to the constitution will make a difference in attendance. All Presbyteries will be replaced by the Perry's of the world eventually.

Mar 18, 2015, 10:46 AM

Probably wouldn't go to a PCUSA church because they've just about completely bought into liberal theology. This is just another step down that road, and I'm guessing more presbyteries will leave the denomination for more orthodox Presbyterian denominations because of this. Sort of ironically, the more orthodox Presbyterians leaving the PCUSA has turned out to mean that, since only the liberals/ heterodox are still left in PCUSA, they've become increasingly liberal.

Looks like the Presbyterians are headed down the same path that split the ELCA. The comments in this article are revealing. If you want to see how far the ELCA and other denominations have strayed, look further at this site. Homosexuality is only the tip of the iceberg. The ELCA has adopted the doctrine that one can believe anything one wishes about the bible. You just have to be tolerate of what any one wants to believe about the bible. It's called, "Bound Conscience" http://www.exposingtheelca.com/on-homosexuality.html

Mar 18, 2015, 11:11 AM

christian theology. It's more and more about watering down the laws of the bible and more about forgiveness. I don't have an issue with homosexuality personally, if you want to be gay, be gay, that's great, but for churches to begin to accept a sin and say its religiously okay to do this is where I draw the line.

Mar 18, 2015, 11:26 AM [ in reply to I think this is where my problem lies with modern day ]

Someone more steeped in the liberal theology of mainline Protestantism might say that the problem is that Evangelical Christianity is too concerned with "the laws of the Bible" and not enough concerned with the redemptive core of Christ's message of love. They also might say that as we have progressed in history, we've come to clearly see that certain older beliefs and practices have been proved wrong by modern thinking (eg. not ordaining women, opposition to homosexual behavior, opposition to abortion, biblical inerrancy, etc.). This is why it's dangerous to hold to any creed (like the Westminster Confession of Faith, which has historically tied together all Reformed Christians).

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A creed can be dangerous.

his ministry by watching for those who would prefer teaching to preaching. They refers to Timothy's congregation and the congregations of believers to come.

The verses are most applicable today for most denominations are 'anything that brings in more people/money goes.'

Teaching is a gift of God with purpose but when it displaces preaching it leaves a church DOA.
