Intredasting meeting I just had.

Oct 25, 2012, 6:05 PM

I'm leaving this job tomorrow, but went ahead and followed thru with one of the "tours" I had on my calendar. This company does camera-based traffic enforcement--things like photo radar speed cameras, red light cameras, etc. The newest creating, called Crossing Guard, is being piloted in 6 or 7 counties in Georgia, including Cobb, Marietta, and a few others. It's essentially a camera device mounted on schoolbuses that takes video of vehicles passing stopped buses when the STOP sign/arm contraption is extended.

Photo radar cameras are controversial, and personally, I think they're bulllshit, because I'm not hurting anybody going 76mph in a 65 zone on the interstate. But, generally speaking, I'm ok with red light cameras, and these schoolbus cameras as well, because those kinds of violations put others in direct danger.

One of the processors walked me thru some of the video he was looking at in Cobb County--capturing license plates, issuing tickets, rejecting/accepting, etc. Really interesting to be looking at that stuff in GA from an office in Tempe, AZ, and issuing $300 tickets, and also a little creepy and Big Brotherish.

What say ye, Junge? You ok with this sort of activity?

Too many kids have been killed around Atlanta getting on/off school buses.

That happens a lot? I had no idea.

I just thought it was common sense to enforce something like that because of the possibility of it happening.

The effective part of it is that once people are slapped with hefty tickets, word spreads fast, and people start paying attention to the stuff they didn't give a second thought to before.

Re:they had a woman in Chicago drive on the right

Oct 25, 2012, 6:30 PM

of a stopped school bus freaking sidewalk rather than wait on a school bus. the driver filmed here because she did this every day. they got the cops to wait at the end of the street and he busted her one day. her mom was interviewed and she referred to the place as abandoned. someone could have walked out of the door of the building where she drove and been killed. she is a totally unrepentant jack a$$ who thinks they are above the rules.

personally I think an officer should have to write the tickets.

Maybe we could prepay for speeding.....pay an extra fee and you are allowed to speed X amount over for X amount of dollars.

fine with red light, not fine with speed cameras

Oct 25, 2012, 6:57 PM

there's more discretion involved with speeding violations, but you generally ran a red light or you didn't.
