When we use the middle of the field, it seems

Oct 9, 2022, 8:50 AM

like the offense rolls. When we are constantly throwing to the outside, we seem to struggle. The answer from everyone is always "use the tight ends" which I agree with, but we don't hit many receivers over the middle.

Anyone agree and why???

I agree entirely . . .

I'm not even saying we need to go crazy on that note, but our play calling could be more balanced. Seems like we simply want to run between the tackles and first and or third down, and throw lots of screens, and only throw the medium long routes occasionally. Anyone watching film on us has every reason to know that we'll do exactly that unless and until we are forced to do otherwise ... which causes us to waste great swaths of the game if it's not working (see last night- a full half). The D was good enough, and BC was bad enough, that we were able to recover. But can we employ that same M.O. against better teams and expect to recover, necessarily, every time? If we play like that against FSU at Doak we might run into more trouble.

The screens and runs up the middle slow down blitzes.

The OL isn't giving up any sacks.

Those play calls are part of the reason.

We've always had a big play offense.

The middle can’t just be the offense’s “strategy”…

…If an offense just thinks that their “bread and butter” is the middle of the field, they’re going to pay for it with interceptions.

To me, it is like the “run game”. You have to keep that running game active. Make the defensive linemen have to think about their technique for run versus pass, not just teeing off on the QB for a sack.

The middle of the field has to come at the right time with routes that play with the linebacker’s mind.

I love the middle-of-the-field plays, but for Streeter to turn that portion of the field into a “predictability” for an opposing defense would be disastrous. I like the BALANCE between the middle, edge, and bubbles that is happening at this time.

You are assuming they aren't. Sometimes the coaches do call a particular play, but the defense has it covered.
