ESPN worked hand and hand with the SEC on getting Texas and OK to the SEC. The BIG 12 was furious with their Commissioner alleging ESPN was tampering.
I wonder where they stand regarding what happens with the ACC. Obviously they are doing a cost benefit analysis and if they are happy with the ACC contract giving them a lot of cheap content through 2036 I would think that could be a major roadblock. Quality content really matters (SEC Football) but they also need just content period. If the ACC splits up and some go to Big 10 (FOX, NBC), some to the Big 12 does ESPN lose content that is not offset by the addition of Clemson and FSU to the SEC(ESPN).
I know the GOR is with the Conference but what are the penalties, contract provisions with ESPN? No one has really talked about that.
May be I am wrong but I would have to think where ESPN stands on this is critical.
ESPN struck a huge bargain with this deal. They laughed all the way to the bank when they got the ACC at Kmart prices. No way they would ever be talked into giving that up.
Next time be careful when signing 20 year deals. In fact, never sign a 20 year deal.
