Ngata’s departure will energize Dabo’s emphasis on development even more.

We will see the de facto emergence of Randall and A. Williams as true studs sooner rather than later.
If he somehow surprises us with a portal pickup, it needs to be for a speed threat, IMO.

Where Ngata will be missed is his blocking

as a receiver, and I don't say this to put him down, but he's replaceable. Yes, I think he could have had a very nice year with Cade. But so can the guys still here. I really want to see a healthy Randall, Antonio and Turner in year 2, Beaux with a QB who can hit him when the ball needs to be thrown. I'm excited about Noble Johnson. Can Stellato actually stay healthy and play?
Good luck to Joe. I think he's going to need it. I don't see his measurables being that impressive honestly. I hope he at least gets a chance.

Nope. He flashed some but dropped a lot of passes too.

I would be shocked if he even signs a free-agent contract. Powell was a much better prospect, and he barely got drafted in the 5th round and eventually didn't make it.

there is no way you'd make it in the NFL. I don't know what Joe is thinking, but he can forget about the NFL. I hope I am wrong for his sake.

Ngata is making a mistake leaving. Just like Hamilton 20 Yeats ago. Left a year early and was out of the NFL in two years.

Joe will be making a living by doing something else besides playing football in less than 2 years. Mark it down!

Dear bdrechs® and striperfan,
Anyone suspect that Dabo, Streeter, and Grisham had a conversation with Ngata and shared their expectation that Ngata would be likely be 2nd string behind A.Randall &/or B.Collins &/or C.Turner?
The purpose for such a conversation would be to motivate Ngata to leave on his own.
We need scholarship room, and it would be a decent way to ‘lose’ a player if he left us, and there was a credible story for us if he left us this way.

if that was the case, JMO, he'd have been better off transferring. No idea what his draft grade came back as, but I can't imagine it was very high

basically everyone else is a freshman or sophomore outside of Spector and Collins. Spector maybe, but we don't run off players. No idea what Ngata's draft grade was, but I think he's leaving because that's what he wants to do

I think it’s a valid theory. There are other “lesser” talents they could have chosen to press into that mold, but perhaps Cole Turner, etc. would not have headliner expectations like Ngata does/did?
All in all, I don’t think his departure makes our WR challenges significantly steeper but for experience in the scheme (to include blocking as @striperfan mentioned).

Several times last year and this year, and even in the Orange Bowl, Ngata’s body language suggested he was very frustrated. At first, I thought this was in response to DJ not getting him the ball but in the Orange Bowl he appeared very upset when he was substituted for when we were in the red zone in the second quarter. We were in the end zone and it was pretty much right in front of us. He was obviously unhappy when it happened and his body language suggested it carried over to the 2nd half. I just can’t help but wonder if he had a little attitude issue that might have kept him with one foot in the love shack some of the time. Might be nothing or it might have contributed.

I feel like people sleep on Beaux way too much. He missed 3 games and got hurt in 2 others. If he was fully healthy like Ngata and Antonio, he would have been our leading WR.
Beaux is good. Maybe not elite like Nuk, Sammy, Mike, Tee, and Ross. But he’s still in that Amari, Peake, and Cornell category. He’s a guy that will probably get drafted and play in the NFL.
Antonio is that guy as well. So we’ll at least 2 of them next year. Everything depends on Adam Randall and Cole Turner. If they take the next step, this WR group should be good.
Hopefully we can also get something out or Noble and/Hanafin.

I think Cade's ability to throw a ball on time will help

Beuax more than any other receiver we have. Everyone wanted to talk about lack of separation of our WR the last few years, but too many times they'd be open on a break and the ball would be thrown late when a DB had a chance to recover. Beuax can get open. And how many times was Antonio wide open for a chunk play last year only never to be seen by DJ?

Beaux also has been the best we have had the last couple of years at battling the DB to make contested catches. Ngata and EJ just didn’t seem to fight for the ball and were looking for flags instead. Beaux isn’t close to Mike Williams or Tee at making the contested catches (yet) but has been better than the other WRs the last couple of years. This is where I have high hopes for Johnson.

Very sad for him. As others have stated, he has not demonstrated the skills required by the NFL; partially due to our weak QB. A year working with Cade could have helped him develop a better resume to show NFL scouts. I’ll be shocked if he’s even drafted.

Why would that be the impetus?

I’d like to think that being one of the highest paid coaches in college football, being a former WR himself, and seeing our WR unit underperform the last few years would energize Dabo to emphasize WR development.

I’m sayin he’s gonna look at it in the classic Dabo “welp, let’s coach these boys up” kinda way and not get his knickers in a bunch about it (which we all know full well he ain’t gunnin for a portal solution as his first alternative…)

Bad decision by Ngata! He is not ready to turn pro! He could have used another developmental season to work on "snatching the ball" in his receiving technique and moving toward the ball on each pass in keeping the defender from intercepting at all times! So much undeveloped talent there! It is a shame!
