Whitey knew what was about to happen to Clemson

4

Oct 23, 2023, 11:14 AM

My offensive coordinator while at Clemson was Whitey Jordan. He went on to coach some of the greatest players of all time and when he retired to daily golf at Boscobel, his track record included schools all across the South as well as NFL Europe. He coached such greats as Charlie Waters at Clemson, Emmitt Smith at Florida, Eric Dickerson/Craig James at SMU ad many others, so he kinda sorta knows what he is talking about when it comes to coaching at the college level.

One day Whitey called me and said his former boss at Florida, Galen Hall, was in town and wanted to play golf and would I join them. Of course, I did. During that round of golf as we walked and talked, Whitey, Coach Hall and I were talking about the trials and tribulations that Tommy Bowden was going through at the time, which were many. Whitey made the statement that when a coach loses his program, his players and his coaches and things go downhill, the first thing to look for is "Bad coaching hires" and that the Head Coach will usually fire Coordinators and/or assistants a year or two before he himself is fired. Once a Head Coach loses his program (mentally) there is no getting it back and firing coordinators and assistants is only a sign that the end is a few short years away.

Interesting conversation with Whitey and Galen and I have seen this truth bear out over and over. I didn't know Whitey was that smart but I guess he was. He hit the nail on the head on this one.

Well the end must be near for Saban because he has hired and fired
a buch of coordinators in his tenure.I do wish we had a bunch of
coaches like Whitey.

Saban goes through them like candy so it’s definitely over for them

Saban does not hire family and friends. He has a history of reaching out to the NFL or wherever he needs to go to get good coaches.

And I believe Dabo will be doing a lot of that this offseason. I’m just baffled at how many people don’t know how competitive Dabo really is and think he’s just out here completely ok with this. He tried his way and I fully expect him to do what’s right this offseason. Now if he doesn’t then by all means it’s over 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Many of his coordinators take head coaching

jobs. A false equivalence to claim the end is near for him.

Saban mostly replaces coordinators who move on the HC jobs. Not so much with the firings. Same with Dabo with Chad, Elliot, Scott, and BV.

So he needs to hire a better staff, but if he fires staff then it’s over

And I know it’s sarcasm.

So you're saying in a year or two Clemson will no longer be relevant

at all and will fire Dabo? hmmm...seems Dabo was in a similar situation prior to winning 2 NC and 6 straight CFP appearances. He made the necessary changes at that time. Too many are writing Dabo off and underestimating him.

Totally agree that changes are needed. Hopefully, Dabo will let Riley make the coaching decisions as far as who to keep and who to get rid of.

While true in some cases I am sure there are plenty of examples of assistant coaches being let go and the head coach staying with the program and succeeding. No one knows when and if the Clemson football team will get back to the College CFP but I believe Dabo can and will get it turned around.

Kevin Steele fired as DC - 2 subsequent Nattys

Some coaches like Saban and Spurrier can be successful despite bad hires or with coordinators leaving. I love Dabo and want him to stay here until he's an old man. However, I do not think he is a coach that can have great success independent of strong and experienced coaches around him. You could argue the same about most college head coaches.

Whew, thanks for clarifying. After reading the subject line, I thought this was going to be another racist post...

He should know. He was one of the worst coaching hires. His offenses

3

were terrible at Clemson. And why they hired him from UNC, which at the time had a bad offense, is unknown.

Most of what he's talking about relates to coaches who aren't legends. Coaches on the hot seat will do anything to save their job. Dabo isn't on the hot seat.

I get it, but this is a different world of football with NIL, TPortal and very few rules. We are headed for a 12 team playoff and even great teams are gonna look bad and drop games and see upsets. Dabo has cleaned house once and gotten out of the way, so I think he could be able to do it again. I do think its time for OC/DC with their own systems and staff to take over.

This message was brought to you by Kevin Steele & Billy Napier

Firing Kevin Steele and hiring Brent Venables is the single smartest thing Dabo ever did.

Hiring Chad Morris is the second smartest thing he did.

Didn't Clemson get better on offense after firing the OC in 2010? Didn't they get better on defense after firing the DC in 2011?

we fired Billy Napier and Kevin Steel in back-to-back seasons, and never looked back.
