Who was our best ever blocker as a Clemson WR?

12

Jul 24, 2023, 7:45 PM

My vote goes to CHARONE PEAKE.

We always get highlight videos of offensive players making long runs or catching passes for TDS.

I wish there was a highlight reel for great blocks thrown by Clemson WRs. I have a feeling Charone Peake would dominate the video.

While watching replays of past games I have noticed several monster blocks thrown by Charone Peake freeing our ball carrier or receiver for big chunks of yardage either out on the edge, or downfield.

Sometimes we wonder why the jet sweeps and the dreaded “bubble screens” aren’t as effective as in the past. One big reason is that we don’t have guys like Charone Peake out there sustaining blocks and pancaking defenders.

Who do you think also deserves credit as an unsung “Blocking Hero” at the WR position?

I agree with you. Not only was he a great blocking WR but he was a very FAST WR. He was great.

Most of the receivers under Danny Ford were good blockers except maybe Perry Tuttle.

Peake was a higher rated recruit than Sammy. Maybe his blocking ability was the reason

My vote for best blocker AND best football player I’ve seen at CU is Sammy..

No doubt. Great ball player tough, fast, and could catch.

Back when Danny Ford ran the triple option

we had some really strong blocking WR's.

I assume you mean in the Bowden/Swinney era.

Which one of Danny’s WRs would you choose?

Jul 24, 2023, 9:57 PM

Certainly back then (out of necessity) you blocked as a WR or you didn’t see the field.

I think Rod Gardner Due West!
Willing blocker; big body! While he was here we ran it probably 60% of the time; so he had to block to see the field.

Charone Peake is a good candidate as well! I remember that kid at Dorman; man he was tough.

(Keith Jennings) became a starter as a junior and was considered at the time the biggest wide receiver in school history. Playing in run-oriented offenses, he excelled at blocking, after the game against the University of Maryland head coach Danny Ford said "Keith is the best blocking wide receiver I've ever seen".

He was a great blocker. He’s bigger than most defensive backs, of course, and he doesn’t mind getting his hands dirty and throwing some great blocks.
