Both seem to have their ardent defenders, but in a fight, whose champions are sober enough to win? Or do they all just slobber all over themselves and fall down and go to sleep?

Hmmmmm………Bourbon wins this brawl, since Scotch is Whisky and not Whiskey. Scotch is the older tradition. Scots will tell you that Scotch is ONLY made in Scotland. They don’t care what the label says. They don’t care how it’s made. If it’s not made in Scotland, then it’s not Scotch. If you ask for a Whisky in Scotland you will be served Scotch. If you complain about it, you will be told that Whisky is Scotch and Scotch is Whisky and Whisky is spelled WITHOUT an “e” or a “I” after the “k”. They will also tell you that Bourbon is Bourbon and Bourbon is not Whisky. Suffice it to say, Scots are exceedingly particular about Whisky and they don’t entertain ANY varying opinions on the subject. I love that about them.
Personally, I like Irish Whiskey the best, but I prefer a good Bourbon more than a good Scotch…….but you’ll never hear me say that in Scotland.

The difference is in the variety IMO. Much more variety in Scotches to me, like wines. Bourbons to me don’t have much difference between them. Scotches on the other hand one can tell something different in nearly every one. That’s why so many people have favorites that vary so greatly on the taste spectrum. Bourbons have their place to be sure but the variety is between great, good & bad. Scotches are more complex I think.
