Why can’t you rotate QBs? General question.
Sep 7, 2022, 12:16 PM

|
Serious question and PLEASE don’t turn this into a DJ vs CK thread.
I’m asking this in general terms; why does it seem that QB is the only position where it’s all or nothing on playing a different QB?
Every other position, even OL to some degree coaches are willing to play multiple people over the course of the game. Not as much energy exerted per play so you aren’t as concerned about their energy levels? Cohesion? If so wouldn’t it make more sense to keep the same RB in all game to get in a rhythm in pass pro? Spurrier was willing to treat QB’s with adult gloves but he seems to be one of the only ones. I’m interested to hear people’s thoughts and thank you for them.

The old saying is "A team with 2 quarterbacks has no quarterback .". It messes with continuity.

Qb’s throw to multiple recievers in the same series and players on defense sub constantly.

and subbing Tebow. Spurrier rotated all the time. The Bucknuts rotated Brandon Miller his senior year, won the title with a 3rd teamer. Bama played Hurts and Tua a bunch.
It's not simple, but it's been done.

Tebow was a short yardage, RedZone, limited use QB. Spurrier didn't rotate quarter backs. He benches the starter to get his head right. Huge difference IMO.

You have to be specific to answer this question. Again, under that thinking you shouldn’t sub recievers or Rb’s either.

well with RBs have you ever heard of feeding the hot hand. You don’t sub a RB who’s gashing the D.
You don’t sub a QB who’s doing the same.

Good question. Coaches choose not to do it. Not sure why.

It could be that the QB position is the hardest job in all of sports and that a player needs more than half of the practice time to be his best. It also seems to have a greater negative effect on team unity than rotations at other positions.
That would be a good post practice question for Dabo at some point.

I’ll say it. Against Furman, it should be open tryouts with each QB rotating out after each series and settle this early. The best man will win the starting job. That’s how I’d do it but I’m not in Dabo’s shoes. I’m not into coddling people’s feelings so my opinion is probably not the best for team chemistry so…

There are pros and cons...
Sep 7, 2022, 12:39 PM
|
|
but I think the cons outweigh the pros.
It's repetition and familiarity.
It's hard to establish an offensive identity.
A team needs an offensive leader. One man they can look to and say, "lead us to victory".
How do you convince a 4 or 5-star quarterback recruit to come play in a system that doesn't give him the entire 60 minutes to win a game?
How good is team chemistry in a locker room when the team loses despite one quarterback playing well and another not playing as well or poorly?

Counters;
Isn’t it the same when a players drops a pass, misses an assignment?
We already create chaos and inconstancy by going from tempo to huddle, RPo to pocket, etc.
Obviously I’m wrong because no one does it but it’s a slow Wednesday for me. Thanks for playing.

Leak and Tebow.
I’m not advocating to change how the position is played; I’m more asking why QB’s are the one position where coaches seem unwilling to sit a guy with the full intention of bringing him back on regardless of how the backup performs / play a different QB that matches up better against a certain defense.

Let's be very clear about that, they did not rotate QB responsibilities. Ignoring that 2006 was a different game than 2022, it was ALWAYS Chris Leak's team. Leak threw the ball 11 times more than Tebow did. Tebow was occasionally used as a wildcat to throw teams off because they didn't know if he would give the ball to Percy Harvin, give the ball to Deshawn Wynn, or keep it. Tebow was closer to another running back than he was a QB.

How is that not rotating qb responsibilities?
Sep 7, 2022, 1:40 PM

That’s no less rotating qb responsibilities as having a run blocking mammoth DT that only plays on running plays. Both involve someone else playing the position.
Also, you’re implying that the game has evolved from 2006 to now; why can’t how coaches treat QB’s?

Tebow was coming off the bench only in certain situations, mostly on the goal line.
The last true 2 QB system that I can recall winning a title was in 2007 when LSU beat Ohio State with Matt Flynn and Ryan Perrilloux as the the 2 QB's.

UGA did this successfully with DJ Shockley and David Greene.
I don't think Cade has shown enough to put that amount of trust in him just yet. I think over the next two games he should get several series in the first half of each game to see how he does.
If we get through a few games and he's knocking it out of the park, then we should keep DJ as the starter but go forward with a dual-QB situation where they go in during different drives.
It would give the opposing team two QBs to prepare for and would give us an advantage.
The old arguments about rythm and field general and all that stuff don't really apply any more. That applied when we used to huddle up, take snaps under center, etc.

What are you talking about? Greene and Shockley didn't rotate drives. Greene was the starter, Shockley was the backup in 2004. Look at the stats or the game logs.

it constantly from UGA fans back then. They split time. They didn't necessarily "rotate" every drive, but they split time. It wasn't right for UGA's offense back then, I don't think, because it was a traditional huddle-up, run the ball, pro-style offense.

start to talk about "flow" and "rhythm." The reasoning always seems to be that it's hard for QBs to get into a good rhythm when they alternate series.
I have also heard it said that it makes leadership tricky, since the QB is typically a leader on the offensive side of the ball.
I tend to agree. I think there needs to be one QB. Backups should only play when the game is decided or the starter gets injured.

I get that if a QB is having success then you don't mess with it. But if a QB is having a bunch of three and outs, what continuity are we suppose to be disrupting?

We do. Sometimes we use a DE to “rotate” their QB, other times we use a LB, safety or corner. For early Saturday morning games we use DT’s to “pancake” their QB. Nothing better than a good “pancake” on a Saturday morning.

I don't recall any time where there was an even split.
It always looks like the coaching staff is trying to keep the #2 happy, even back when transferring wasn't a very easy option.
Spurrier did this at UF, but it seemed more like he was just trying to confuse the other team and jerk the #1's chain a bit. He did this with Terry Dean and Danny Wuerfful the year or so before Danny was the unquestioned starter. He did it again with Doug Johnson and ? I can't recall...but Johnson needed to be yanked out of there at times.
As noted...Chris Leak was the for-sure starter with way more reps and stats. Tebow came in on wildcat and other special situations. Chris Leake, a Ron Zook recruit, won that first title in '06 for Urban Meyer (Tebow's first year). Tebow won the '08 title.

Two examples: 1. Tom Landry tried it, with Roger Staubach and Craig Morton. It was reasonably successful, but he abandoned it and Staubach got the job. Much better results. 2. Steve Spurrier did it with two QB's rotating on every play against FSU. It worked - for that one game. Not a good long term option.
"When you have two starting QB's you have no starting QB's."
Not sure I can quantify exactly. It may have something to do with getting into a rhythm. It may have something to do with team chemistry. It may have something to do with different cadences and timing with the OL. I don't know. But, for whatever reason, it just doesn't seem to work.
