Why do our receivers

Oct 4, 2021, 10:22 AM

Hardly ever look open? It's puzzling. I'm sure they're running the same routes we have ran in the past

.

to be honest, our wrs never really have been wide open

Oct 4, 2021, 10:25 AM

i think our routes are basic.
We just had super start qbs to get it to them.
Think of how many 50/50 balls TL and DW had.

It was very rare to see our wrs completely open.
I think mainly b/c 80% of our passes are sideline passes

Ask Grisham. WR's can't beat press coverage. Run lazy/wrong routes half the time. Won't fight for the ball. Make too many drops. Don't/won't block on the perimeter.

Screw Calford.

LSU wrote the book on our receivers/passing game…..they kept everything pushed to the sidelines….they said so.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

We have DB’s draped all over our receivers on every play, still comes back to coaching imo. You can turn the channel and watch every other game and receivers are wide open all the time, but not for Clemson. It’s a huge problem and has been for a while. Every reception we make seems like the WR is having to make a miracle circus catch over a defender.

How about different receivers, different talent and different commitment.

It's simple.

Defenses take away the deep shots by playing two high safeties all game. This forces our WRs to win on underneath routes against man coverage. The problem is that we don't have WRs that are great at that. All of our WRs are tall, vertical threats. Literally all of them. Ross, Ngata, Ladson, EJ, and Ajou are all 6'4 vertical threats. Our top 5 WRs are all the same player.

When we need Amari Rodgers, Cornell Powell, Hunter Renfrow, or those type of WRs to win underneath against man coverage, we don't have them. Our WRs aren't creating separation because they're all massive bodies that lack lateral quickness to get in and out of breaks at an elite level. It's not their fault. It's the coaches for fault for creating this situation in our WR room.

Anyone know if we recruiting any of these types of WR?

Oct 4, 2021, 12:43 PM

I don't pay nearly enough attention to recruiting.

Our first commitment for 23 is that type of player. Shorter but ridiculously quick with good change of direction.

Adam Randall, 6'3, is committed for this class. We are pursuing Andre Greene, who's also 6'3. If Greene commits elsewhere, we might end up offering Antonio Williams from Dutch Fork. He's more versatile. Either way, whue aren't fixing this problem next year. All we can hope is that Brannon Spector and Troy Stellato can become impact players.

2023 has Nathaniel Joseph committed. He's 5'9 and really really fast. That's a start, I guess. I wish we never got in the situation that we are in. We need to use the portal. We are losing Ross and probably Ngata as well. It would be great if we found a speedster in the portal since we aren't going to sign one in this recruiting class.

Some of us have been pointing this out for years...

and now everyone seems to be catching on. Underneath routes just don't work well for non-elusive 6'3 guys. We need a variety of options on the outside.

When our run game is working well, it forces safeties to come closer to the line for run support. With a not-very-good run game, our offense is cooked.

Last year, defenses were forced to key on ETN, but he's gone now.
