Will Brownell leave us after a few years of success?

Mar 9, 2017, 12:56 PM

"If we hire so and so and we have tremendous success, somebody will just hire him away."

Is that a valid concern for an AD when hiring a potential coach? How do you answer that question when evaluating a potential coaching hire?

Is it simply an excuse for inaction?

At this point I think we'd risk it for a little success.***

Agreed I dont think the fact that we are not an elite basketball program should stop you from hiring the best coach possible.

If he leaves he leaves but at least you know you got several great years.

and IF, BIG IF the get that success that U speak of why would we let someone else just hire him away?? We are paying an unsuccessful coach a ton of $$$ with a completely UNEARNED HUGE BUYOUT so why would we not pay this new SUCCESSFUL COACH?? that does not make sense!

I agree. It doesn't make any sense

to be worried about a coach having so much success at Clemson that he gets other offers. I think that would be a great problem to have. Even if we lost him we would be in a better position to hire another great coach.

I was pointing out the absurdity of the argument.

If you are asking is Clemson a stepping stone program for most coaches??

Sadly the answer to that is probably yes.

I think that thought should ONLY come into your mind if you have say two candidates who are fairly equal but one has connections to the University that might keep him here.

I would take 2-3 years of good basketball and risk the coach leaving.
Over having stability at the Coaching position if this is all we can do with it.
Eventually the right Coach will love it enough to stay .
It's different now than it was with Barnes which is really the only coach that has used us as a stepping stone.
He basically left because his family didn't like it here .

I agree that is why I said the only way it should influence your decision is if you think the candidates are equal and the only difference is one has a connection to the University.

Hire the best man for the job and if that best man has a connection to the University then that is just an added bonus.

I believe if we ever get a good Coach here and CLEMSON pays him.
He would stay unless one of the blue bloods came calling.
I mean CLEMSON is in the ACC and with the football success a brand name now.
With the right Coach and a few good runs just like football the studs will come .

Yes. Brownell would love to be at a Big 10 basketball school

Mar 9, 2017, 1:57 PM

or just any basketball school.

Yes, pretty much any coach will jump ship with success. But that's OK. I'll take a nice 3 year run in the NCAAs.

Exactly the only reason that should factor into your decision for a hire is if one of the candidates who is equal to the others has a connection to the University.

Other than that go with who is best.

Or didn't take a chance on an unproven assistant

Mar 9, 2017, 2:14 PM

It worked out with Dabo for football, but basketball we didn't look at Shaka Smart or Will Wade.. who were both Clemson Assistants... oops
