but since other folks are releasing their mug shots, here you go!
These 4 guys (me on right aka Bill Willis, age 24, married & living in a WW2 prefab house located near & above present baseball park) were the unpaid volunteer student sport’s writers on The TiGER’s student campus newspaper.
Sammi Carros, 2nd from left,, later became Sports Editor.
We guys wrote weekly independent sport’s articles on current events that were given to us my our Editor to cover, interviewed coaches & players of various sports teams and sometimes were given state-owned cars to drive to various away games and had full press box privileges.
We would bring our handwritten or typed articles to a 2nd floor office by a certain timeframe before printing date where clerical staff took them, corrected or shortened them and gave them the neat tittles and we’d anxiously wait to see the paper days later which was distributed in stands around campus but usually at the Loggia in a huge rack located between the Tin Cans central entrance.
Seeing one’s article was sometimes shocking what with the title, the pic used, the amount of corrections or how much the article was shortened! Felt a bit like a 1940’s actor who first sees the movie he/she acted in and their main parts and/or lines were deleted.
But, it was a super gig and maybe a reason I write on TNet a lot and way too much.
I still have yellowed old paper copies of some of my articles concerning interviewing Coach Howard, Bob Jones, Bonnie Banks McFadden, members of the FB & BB teams, etc..and maybe one day (after 58 years & 15 here) I will post a pic of them.
The two funniest ones being “The Day Coach Howard kicked me out of Fife” and the basketball article I wrote while in Greenville Hospital in Jan 1966 while in a traction bed for a fractured right hip in 28 fragments and was still a bit on morphine and which got the Sports Editor to replace me!
I had a great Clemson buddy & fellow student, Larry Walters, who would visit me and I believe he may have carried this particular article back to The TiGER staff.
Ha..what fun and good ole days @ Clemson College in 1959-1966, ratting & rat caps, climbing the greased Flag pole in front of Tillman, seeing the fiery Gator Farr at a pre bonfire pep rally at the Amphitheater, thumbing rides home, being single & married to compare, the CLEM in Cadence Count, Dan & Dan’s Sandwich Shop, President RC & Moonpie, AF ROTC marching practices on what is now tennis courts, the YMCA and seeing weird movies, thinking football players were campus gods, eating a steak meal at a Walhalla steak house on Friday nights for a Buck, etc~
Go TiGERS..ROCK whether old or modern!
