2014-15 Basketball

Mar 17, 2014, 10:34 PM

Expect KJ to go pro, and it may be his best option. I also encourage KJ to speak with Vic Beasley about the factors that brought Beasley back for his senior year. KJ, like Beasley before him, appears to be in position to cash in moderately now or cash in more in another year with the added benefit of a Clemson degree.

Fully respect KJ's decision based on the shoes he's walking in. IF KJ comes back, Clemson has the chance to make some noise by winning big at home with some key road wins and finish in Top 4 of ACC - with Louisville joining the conference this is no small feat. Without KJ, it's another rebuilding year.

Encourage Hall to continue work on his shooting and quickness skill sets - Hall's progress this year was legit and appreciated. Blossomgame and Nnoko will need to step up and become go-to guys next year with or without McDaniels. As others have noted, Filer and Roper can also make a move. Encourage all our players to find a Summer pro camp for legal off-season scrimmages. Go Tigers and thanks for your hard work this year!

As a fan, I certainly hope KJ comes back. I also think it is the smart thing for him to do professionally. He is an unreal athlete that just needs a little polish before he can go big time IMO.

Certainly better with KJ, but hardly rebuilding

Mar 17, 2014, 10:59 PM

we'll either have 4 or 5 starters back. With KJ we're a preseason tourny team. Without KJ we're middle of the pack ACC but with a chance at the tourny. The same type player development we've seen with KJ and Hall we'll see with guys like Nnoko, Blossomgame, Djitte anf Filer. And a team with a dependable senior point guard like Hall will be a threat every night, with or without KJ. If KJ does leave, and I still think he returns, he'll be missed far more on the defensive end. We'll find the points elsewhere, but he's a huge difference maker on defense.

Two points

1) The NBA salary structure makes almost no difference in salary based on where KJ can realistically expect to be drafted this year vs. next. The difference between 20th (where he is today) and where his ceiling is (12th or so) is less than 400K a year for 3 years.

The secret to the NBA is to start the clock towards Free Agency and the big pay date.

2) You say Clemson is a Top 4 team. How or who do you see Clemson ahead of next year.

1) Virginia
2) Duke
3) Syracuse
4) North Carolina
5) Louisville
6) Pittsburgh

Not to mention
NC State returns their entire team and has 2 top 20 players, 4 star players.

Notre Dame - If Grant comes back from academics and Katenda is healthy along with 2 players ranked 4 stars then the Irish will be much improved.

Clemson -If KJ comes back this gives Clemson something to build on. But the Tigers have to improve on the non conference SOS. Even with KJ the ACC is going to be so strong next year, Clemson could be better but the record worse due to the incredible challenge of the ACC.

Wake - Seems to be running in circles
FSU - Has a lot to replace after this season.
Ga Tech - Could pull it all together and should be improved.

Va Tech, BC, Miami are looking at long term rebuilding projects.

The challenge for Clemson going forward in the ACC is at least equal to if not greater than what So Carolina faces in SEC football.

You seem to be a little confused...

Mar 17, 2014, 11:05 PM

USuC doesn't normally play the best teams in the SEC, and comparing the SEC east with Kentucky, Kandy, UT, and Florida to ACC basketball is way off base. And then you throw in teams like Miss St and Arkansas, and you really struck out with your comparison.

Re: You seem to be a little confused...

Mar 17, 2014, 11:10 PM

I tried to have a civil conversation and be complimentary of the job Clemson basketball has come......but.

The SEC has been ranked the Top Conference in football for 11 years in a row.

The ACC was ranked 5th this year and has not been the top ranked conference since 2007.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, that's all well and good or whatever, but

Mar 17, 2014, 11:18 PM

..your comparison was silly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh, and one more thing..

"The SEC has been ranked the Top Conference in football for 11 years in a row."

Where are you getting that from?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

2003, 2004, 2005, 2010, 2011...

Mar 17, 2014, 11:32 PM

Those were years where Sagarin didn't think the SEC was the best football conference, for starters.

And too, regardless of conference strength, did I mention you don't play the best teams in the conference?

team. They would lose their best player as would we if KJ leaves. I think you underestimate KJ's ceiling if he improves his shot and ball handling. Draft class next year not near as deep(not knowing early entries), so if he did that he could be a top ten pick and that is substantially more money. As for the ACC next year:

UVA loses it's leader in Harris and a solid 4 in Mitchell, but are well positioned for a sustained run of success.

Duke will lose Parker and Hood and both are projected top 10 picks. Also lose 2 senior leaders in Hairston and Thornton, but they are Duke, so they'll be good.

Sysracuse will lose Fair and maybe Ennis who is now rated the best pure PG who could come out. A guy like Smart is more of a scorer.

The holes will lose McAdoo and McDonald and Paige could also come out.

Pitt loses their 2 best players in Patterson and Zanna but they are a program and will find a way(what we're looking to become)

FSU loses Miller and White.

ND should get Grant back, but will lose Atkins who was a 4 year starter at PG, and Sherman their leading scorer

WF and Tech both have the potential to improve. UM and BC lack elite athletes,

As for us, with KJ we're a tourny team. Without KJ we still could be. Nnoko would have to continue his progress, which I expect. Hall and his stability and leadership is a huge advantage for us, plus I expect him to also continue to progress offensively. I expect Blossomgame to make a big jump next year, similar to KJ between his freshman and sophomore years. Harrison showed the last 6 weeks he can be a key piece. Roper and Filer both can and should become more consistent. I expect Djitte to make noticable strides this off season. The we add Grantham, Devoe and Rooks, 3 skilled offensive players, especially as shooters, which is the biggest need we have. I don't expect any of them to be double digit scorers as they won't have to be, but between the 3 of them, they will add that shooting dimension and make us better offensively. If KJ leaves Grantham probably starts. I love this team next year with KJ, but even without him, we'll continue to head in the right direction and I'd still expect us to contend for a tourny birth.

"Almost no difference"

Mar 17, 2014, 11:08 PM

Have you made 1.2 million in three years time? That's a pretty substantial difference in my opinion.

Also congrats to your second team, the Terriers, on making the tournament. Too bad your coots didn't sniff any postseason action.

Re: "Almost no difference"

Mar 17, 2014, 11:14 PM

Thanks for the Terriers....at least we get paid. I am not very optimistic about Michigan. Not a good match up at all for us but in a one and done game who knows.

Imagine the Wolverine Nation if they lost to Wofford from the SoCon after losing to App State from the Socon in football a few years back.

As far as So Carolina who cares, not me. Have not been to game there in over a decade. Probably been to LittleJohn around 15 to 20 times over the same time frame.

Not going to Carolina basketball game......I guess that makes me like everyone else.
