theres always been this ceiling issue with Clemson

i don't know if its changed now b/c of the new structure but Clemson hasn't been a desirable job b/c of the lack of push they get in the ACC and the tobacco road bullies who steal the limelight. Is tobacco road headed downhill, yes. So maybe there is a more level playing field but I don't know if its enough to attract top flight coaches. They have perennially owned the conference in terms or notoriety, recruiting, money, and marketability. I could see Jay going to Syracuse since he's a historically big east guy. But an historically inferior program like Clemson basketball? Probably not.

When we have an opening, we will have to go the mid major route like we always do. I guess its akin to big name coaches never taking the Vanderbilt job or the Wake Forest job... there's a ceiling. We're a temp job for most coaches. No one comes to Clemson for basketball and says this is my forever job. Unless they don't have other prospects. Somebody like Jay Wright, if is looking to come out of retirement, will not be looking for a temp position in hopes of another career landing spot. So all that to say, I doubt it.

With the "company line" that ESPN is pushing about the ACC

being a failing conference, Clemson becomes a less desirable destination in basketball now, even after physical plant improvements.

I believe, for better or worse, the ACC is going to destruct in no more than three years from now, driven by football realignment. Where Clemson winds up once that happens will have a lot to do with how desirable a job Clemson basketball coach will be going forward from that.

If we wind up in one of the two "Super Conferences" that the SEC and BIG are heading toward being, we will be fine. If not, we, like the rest of the schools, will be left scrambling. A lot of TUMS will be consumed between now and then.

Clemson has a failed approach to hiring basketball coaches

i.e., doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results, and unless and until that changes, inconsistency and mediocrity will continue to be the norm.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

While not arguing that a change is not needed, Clemson has

most certainly not done the same things over and over again in hiring coaches for the basketball program.

Clemson has tried just about everything except luring a guy out of retirement.

Since 1970, we’ve tried the following:

Tates Locke … hot young assistant recommended by college basketball legend (Bobby Knight)
Bill Foster … recently run off head coach of Va Tech with a violation-free rep, but mediocre record to take over during NCAA probation.
Cliff Ellis … fairly hot young head coach from a good program with a record of success.
Rick Barnes … successful head coach from a solid program, highly regarded as an up-and-comer.
Larry Shyatt … former Barnes assistant with only one year of head coaching experience.
Oliver Purnell … reasonably successful mid-major coach who was our first minority hire.
Brad Brownell … reasonably successful mid-major coach.

If Jay Wright were interested and we could pay him, he’d be a great hire.

But, he quit Villanova for a reason (did he jus lose the fire) and he was making great money there, so is he worried about a salary?

Have you seen our coach now? Forever job?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

destination job is another term.

Brad will stay here as long as we keep rolling out the checks. The question was Jay Wright. Jay Wright is not Brad Brownell.

I hope he is a promising OL prospect. We need some more

Hiring a guy who is past his prime and ready to hang it up

Mar 24, 2023, 12:12 PM

… is about the only coaching experiment we have yet to try in Clemson basketball history.

We’ve tried pretty much every other route.

So sure, if he’s interested, pay him and get him on board for a few years.

Why not? It could work. Who knows?

We have almost nothing to lose except a bunch of money.
