Why has our willingness to throw the ball down field dropped off a cliff? Is it QB? Was DJ inaccurate to the point of Tony and Streeter avoiding deep throws consistently? Didn't seem to be an issue in 2020 for him against BC and ND. Cade is very well capable of throwing the ball deep. So why the drop off?
But I keep hearing it's not WR and not Grisham.

I was told our lack of downfield passing against Wake was because we were playing it safe and not opening up the playbook since we knew we could handle Wake, and didn't want to reveal too much to future opponents.

have a Watkins/Williams/Higgins, I'm certain the guys we've got are more talented than Wake's, yet our passing game was no better than theirs, and they were playing against a MUCH better defense. It's mind-bottling to think that our coaching is that bad, but I can't come up with any other explanation. Not sure if it's technique, knowledge, or motivation, but something is off.

I don't buy we are holding anything back except maybe a few special packages for special situations. We needed and pretty much used all we had against FSU. At some point, we just have to recognize that, "it is what it is" or, as Porky Pig would say, "Tha, Tha, That's all folks."

The problems throwing downfield have been less WR based and more OL based this year. Teams are dropping into a lot of 3/4 deep shells because they don't respect our ability to run the ball against a light box. So far they've been right, and when they haven't been right (second half against Duke), they've been banking on being able to stop us in the red zone (where they've pretty much universally been successful). We have plenty of problems with WRs - blocking is a major one - but the downfield passing game being completely gone is much more the result of bad OL play/bad red zone play and how defenses are playing us as a result than it is WR play. Even with top level WR play you can't force deep throws into 3/4 man shells consistently.

3 or 4 deep very often if at all. The WRs just rarely beat their man.

I'll use your new metric, YPA. Looks like we are rebounding....
2015-2020: 8.3 average
DJ: 6.4 average
Cade: 6.5 (not counting his 2022 starts where he was 7.04)
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Cool side note, Cade started in two games in 2022, the same team DJ had a full regular season with. Cade had a 64.1% completion rate and averaged 7.04 ypa. Both improvements over DJ's 61.9% completion rate and 6.8 ypa, and all over better competition.
So a freshman came in against tougher competition and had a better completion percentage (the original metric you used to measure QBs) and a higher ypa (the metric you pivoted to when you were presented with the actual completion percentage figures)? If YPA is a measure of WR play, as you are insinuating, we need to ask why the WRs played better for Cade than DJ.
And I'm not defending Streeter (as you previously incorrectly stated), DJ, Cade, WRs, or anyone else, I'm just doing math.

see info (probably not available) on yards downfield at time of catch for those years. I don't think it addresses the issues this year. Just curious. We used to have guys that could get open down the field and QBs that could get it there. We also had guys (Sammy) that could take a 10 yard catch to the house. Brown and Williams may be bringing that back to the offense. Hope the OL can keep the pocket long enough to allow it to be utilized. On a side note, would be nice to have a game-breaker in the backfield again. I like Shipley and Mafah, but they are not Travis, Feaster, or Ellington.

Probably several reasons; not having a super fast deep threat wide receiver, and a week offense of line that can’t hold off the defense long enough for receivers to get down field.
Lawrence and Watson were elusive enough to move around in the backfield and buy time, and then they had great arm strength to get the ball to receivers further down the field.
DJ couldn’t move around quick enough to buy time, and Cade is not quite to the same level as Lawrence and Watson, yet.
