I used to think we had the most knowledgeable football fans

No more! that has been an unfortunate casualty of our more recent success

I feel like we have attracted a bunch of bandwagon football fans that don’t know jack have diluted the football iq of our fan base

I don’t think Walt Deptula is helping the cause either

The 2015ers are special and Walt has the IQ of a rock. I don’t get how he stays on the radio with his douchey personality.

As an example on this forum just yesterday, one of our "fans" stated ESPN was going broke despite the $250M in profit they reported last year. Their profit is trending down, but they are hardly broke.

I’ll play devils advocate on ESPN being broke as it’s a bit of a straw man argument that they’re not headed that way. Not only is their profit trending down, it’s trending down due to market forces that they’re powerless to stop (loss in carriage fees due to cable cutters) and their main competitors in the space all offer streaming platforms, which they lack. Reports are they might offer a streaming service, but it’s rumored to be in the neighborhood of $35 a month, which will not gain traction in an overly saturated market where consumers are showing streaming fatigue. Now, maybe they get sold to Apple or Amazon and that’s cheese some of their ills since those are already established streamers, but that doesn’t guarantee success as their own parent company lost $512 million on Disney+ alone last quarter.

I’m honestly surprised they can offer $24 million per school for Cal, Stanford and SMU. Just some back of the napkin math based on available numbers, and you’ve got a combined 2 mil in weekly viewers, multiply that by the rate ESPN gets off the ACC network .73, and then multiply that by 12, and you’re looking at an increase in revenue of / little over $17.5 mil. Math doesn’t add up, but we’ll see if it works.

ESPN is being drug down by the parent company bleeding cash.

You may well be correct...

But to insult an entire group of people without listing any specific example of what you led you to that conclusion sounds a little reactionary... it sounds weak. It IS weak.

Instead of insulting some nebulous group of people who evidently make points with which you disagree, I suggest that you refute them individually and directly. Otherwise, posts like this make you sound close-minded and elitist. It makes you similar to that senile old git whose every ALL CAPS post is made to insult anyone who says anything that could be considered critical of what's going on in Clemson athletics at the moment. Don't be that guy. If you've really been a fan for more than 40 years you should be capable of adding more to the conversation than that.

because I'm no longer a donor. If you have something substantive to say about Clemson athletics, I will listen and respond. If all you do is seek for chances to criticize others, or your comments are otherwise a waste of this site's bandwidth, then yeah. There are thousands of members here... and at LEAST 186 are worth ignoring. If you disagree, that's fine. Ignore me; that's fine too. I don't give a shyatt. But you won't see me calling anyone an idiot who makes a substantive post or responsive comment.

Well it's true we've gained a lot of idiot, bandwagon, walmart fans since 2015.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

We have an oversensitive fan base too. Too many think everything is some conspiracy to get Clemson.

If you honestly don't give a Shyatt then why ignore anyone?

Because I got tired of wading through...

Aug 30, 2023, 11:13 PM

post after post of nothing from people who are obsessed with getting to 70.000 likes, or the guys who consider themselves to be hilarious comedians and have to make 40-50 posts of their silly crap day after day, and 98% of has nothing to do with what this site was started for - TIGER SPORTS.

I'll give you an example: I have nothing against 'ol spud and his fish stories; but I couldn't possibly care less about how many crappie he caught at Hartwell today... I just don't give a shyatt about that. Obviously a lot of Tigernet members do, but I don't. So for me, that's gotta go. If he talked more about Clemson football, and had something thought provoking to say about it, I'd read it.

I know exactly who you’re talking about. I know who the unfunny, funny man is, and the thumbs up chaser. Your right. That stuff is fake and you can see right through it. Tigernet has always had the overboard sunshine pumpers, but you used to see a lot more differing opinions and not the echo chamber you see a lot of now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow, his Ignore list reads like a "Who's Who" of Tigernet.

Aug 31, 2023, 8:13 AM [ in reply to ^Ignores 186 posters^ ]

He even ignored Joe21 ! I am almost sad I did not make the list.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Joe21 should have had a blog

Aug 31, 2023, 9:17 PM

for his stories. I'm sure they were a real inspiration to many Tigernet readers... but the vast majority of the time it had nothing to do with Clemson sports. THAT'S what I come here for. If you're retired and you have all day to read 200-300 posts about this and that and the other thing then knock yourself out!! One thing I've learned in the 27 years I've been a member here - those who make the most posts say the least.

Ok, I'm finished 76er. You can get back to ol' spuds daily Clark Hill Reservoir Smallmouth update.

Re: You may well be correct...

Aug 30, 2023, 12:05 PM [ in reply to You may well be correct... ]

Ok. Here are a few examples:

There is a guy that sits 3 rows in front of me dressed to the nines and he screams all game long “why do you keep running the ball up the middle”?

In the 80’s you’d get your butt kicked for being that dumb. Fast forward to today he has a bunch of people that agree with him that see no reason to run the ball and cannot understand why we don’t pass the ball every play.

Example 2:

It used to be common knowledge that you stand up and make noise on 3rd down when the other team has the ball. Now, people act annoyed - even in the 4th quarter with the game on the line.

These people used to be rare birds at Clemson games. Now they are sitting in every freaking section.

Those people that think that they know everything are

particularly annoying to those of us who do. ;)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would you think that?***

Walt sold out to financial interests long ago. He is very careful what he says these days. Makes his show boring and predictable. It used to be really good many years ago

Take a venture to other message boards to find the far left or far right of a fanbase.

To generalize an entire fanbase on what you find on TNET is hardly evidence of anything, it is more of a reflection on the person who has been offended.

Crazies exist everywhere, and they are usually the most vocal.

Re: I used to think we had the most knowledgeable football fans

Aug 31, 2023, 8:18 AM

I've always felt like we have a very dumb fanbase, and it has nothing to do with people joining since 2015. Even when I was at Clemson back in the Bowden era, people didn't have a clue about football. We probably have the most sunshine pumpers of any school I've seen. Look at the thread about Riley Leonard going on right now. Someone just said, "this kid is a good QB and is trouble." For anyone with a brain cell, that's true. He's a very talented young quarterback. He was accurate, threw for 3,000 yards, 20 TDs, and 6 interceptions against a tough schedule. Duke's losses were all extremely close games. And yet the guy who dared compliment another player is being lambasted in that thread.

They aren’t that dumb. They just know being honest and level headed can cost them points. This board would be amazing if people weren’t obsessed with points. You see posts that congratulate people on point milestones. ###
