I relent.

My contention on Solomon's wisdom after knowing for nearly 65 years that he had taken a thousand wives and concubines was that he just wasn't that smart. He did exactly what Mosaic Law forbid and took women from the gentiles which worshiped and desensitized the Hebrew nation to fake gods. That is why Israel fell as a regional empire for that was God's promise. Only God's promise to David saved Solomon from being a victim with the nation.

However, after reading slowly and carefully through the first dozen chapters of Proverbs I am beginning to understand just how craftily Solomon delivered a sermon.

First let me provide a couple of definitions from Proverbs chpt 9 verse 10.

The beginning/foundation of Wisdom is 'The fear of the LORD.

Understanding is 'the knowledge of the holy.'

"10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding."

He perfectly laid out the basic concepts of wisdom and strewn in among all the attributes of wisdom he sprinkles in the alluring attributes of the harlot. I always read that and considered that females, breastices and such being his obsession he was simply changing the subject.

He was saying that wisdom is our wife, given of God and suitable to be a perfect companion, check above for the definition again. The allure of life's foolishness of not 'fearing God, is likened to that of a beautiful woman who is always ready to go.

Good way to look at it. Opposite things lead to fun discussion.

1. God lived up to his promise, making Solomon wise.
2. Solomon made silly, fatal mistakes.

Which is it? Or, how can both be true? It seems to be as you said, that we sometimes dont accept the truth that is revealed to us, and that wisdom is therefore often looking back at those times. "I wish I could do X again with what I know now." Maybe we knew it then, and we thought we could go a better way, and now we know there isnt one..

Solomon was an expert in a lot of what not to do. He knew a lot about multiple different types of women, because he had a lot of experience in this area. All that knowledge turned to wisdom when he feared the Lord.

I saw my children's mother all across Proverbs. At one time or another so many of those variety of women Solomon described fit her.

If Solomon had chosen my woman she would have been running Israel in three months. RIP ole girl.

I dated enough bone rotting foot stampers to know that I ended up being well blessed in the marriage department.

Proverbs is probably tied with John as my favorite book. I think I was nine when I first read it. I have re-read it periodically through out my life. It is a great view point book, as in I have gotten something different out of it as I have grown through life.
