Wake coach not happy with Watson playing late |
Clemson (11-0, 8-0 ACC) defeated Wake Forest 33-13 on Saturday in Death Valley on Saturday afternoon.
The Clemson coaching staff played a slew of players since it was Senior Day and tried to get a few hard-earned snaps for the majority of the backups and walk-on players. Senior walk-on receiver Jordan Bianchi caught his first reception of his career during mop-up duty, and senior walk-on Brennan Goodnature had his first career carry that went for six yards. Swinney was excited for the senior players getting a chance to play. "We got to play a lot of guys tonight, and some of them even got to touch the ball, which is really exciting for them on Senior Day," Swinney said. Wake Forest's head coach Dave Clawson appeared to have a problem with Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson re-entering the game late in the fourth quarter. A reporter asked the following question after the game, "Were you bothered at the end when Watson comes back out there?" "I've got no comment on that," Clawson said. "I have no comment. They make a decision that is best for their program. It's our job to defend them. I think it was obvious to everybody what they were trying to do, and we were successful that they tried to do it and we stopped them. So that's a win at the end because they were -- everyone knows what was going on." Deshaun Watson completed 21-of-30 passes for 304 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions and also had ten carries for 44 yards. Watson talked after the game about playing a lot of guys on Saturday against Wake Forest. “It was Senior Day, so we wanted to get a lot of guys playing time. We wanted to rotate a lot of guys in and let them have a chance to play in their last game in Death Valley.” Backup quarterback Kelly Bryant played some valuable minutes and had eight carries for 58 yards.
