Tigers Rout Indiana St in Rainbow Classic

HONOLULU - Clemson had six players score nine points or more as the Tigers routed Indiana State 83-57 in the consolation round of the Rainbow Classic on Wednesday evening.

In total, Clemson (8-2) got scoring from 11 players including a game high 13 points from Akin Akingbala and 11 from Vernon Hamilton.

“Playing three straight nights we felt we needed to go deep in our bench,” said Clemson head coach Oliver Purnell. “Shawan (Robinson) was struggling a little bit and Cheyenne (Moore) was struggling, so we gave Jimmy (Hudson) an opportunity and he gave us a pretty big lift there early.”

The Tigers were able to take advantage of their surperior size to outscore the Sycamores (5-5) 12 to 2 in the paint. The Tigers built their lead with defense as they held Indiana State to 30 percent from the field (18-59) and also forced 22 turnovers that resulted in 29 Clemson points.

A 12-0 run in the first half gave the Tigers a sizeable cushion which they maintained the rest of the game. Clemson led 44-24 at the break.

Mick Yelovich led the Sycamores with 15 points, while David Moss added 12.

Clemson will face Georgetown in the tournament's fifth-place game on Thursday at 6:30PM EST.
