Michael Johnson Signs With Padres Late Monday Night |
CLEMSON -- Clemson fifth-year senior first-baseman Michael Johnson agreed to terms with the San Diego Padres late Monday night. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The Padres retained Johnson's rights after drafting the 2002 junior in the second round in the 2002 Major League June Draft. San Diego had until midnight last night to sign Johnson, or he would have been reentered into the 2003 draft pool. Johnson will join former teammate and 2002 Unanimous National Player-of-the-Year Khalil Greene in the Padres' farm system. Greene was a first-round pick of the Padres last season.
Johnson hit .338 with 12 homers and 51 RBIs in 2003. He also walked 63 times and had a .498 on-base percentage. In his four-year career, Johnson was a career .344 hitter with 58 homers, 52 doubles, 213 RBIs, 169 walks, 25 stolen bases, and a .465 on-base percentage in 235 games. The 58 homers was one shy of the Tiger career record of 59 held by Jeff Baker (2000-02) and ranked tied for fifth in ACC history. He also made 2,131 career putouts, second-most in NCAA history.
