I would like to keep Chad another year, but do not begrudge him taking a head coach position, particularly at a Power 5 school in his home state of Texas. This is his profession, and Power 5 jobs don't come along every day. I am sure that he is handling it professionally, and keeping Dabo in the loop. This is what happens when you have good coaches-and players; they get hired to coach or play (e.g., Sammy) elsewhere. We cannot be upset with them, only wish them well.
Venables will likely face a similar decision soon. I could see Iowa being interested in him whenever they put their current coach out to pasture. I would hate to lose Venables, but would also wish him well.
I am glad Dabo is our coach, and trust him to make good hiring decisions, as he did with both Morris and Venables. Some people give him a hard time for taking a more CEO approach, but most major programs-which we want to continue being-handle things this way, and it works well in these kinds of transitional situations. It is conceivable that we lose both Morris and Venables in the same year, maybe this year. The sign of a strong program is to continue excellence, and I think Dabo had laid the groundwork for excellence at Clemson.
The bottom line is that Morris and Venables, and whoever the next assistant coaches are, will either be promoted or fired. It is just the nature of their chosen profession. I do not envy them that (although they get paid well for it).
If SMU is the job Morris wants, I hope he gets it and does well. Clemson will remain strong.
