The State defender lead high with his head down making contact on Gallman with the crown of his helmet, which should have been called targeting. The hit on Shipply had the defender coming in low with his head up and contact by the forehead area of the helmet. I don't see how else he could have made that play. His shoulder bent Ship's head down which was very scary to see. On the Gallman hit the defender should have had his head up.
The targeting calls I don't like are when a defender comes in low across the lower front of the runner's body and the runner lowers his head and contact is made. Maybe the defender should still have his head up, but most of those don't seem to be in anyway intentional but still get called.
The hit Saturday was a weird hit. State kid was not Making a dirty or even unsound football play. Shipley has falling and the kid hit him helmet to helmet. I think he was trying to take him low but it did not work out the way. It was still targeting by the letter of the rule. The refs could have called it but chose not to. Probably because it looked like the kid was trying to do the right thing.
