NO. I most often see 3,500psi for a 6" slab with #3 rebar in commercial paving/parking.

All you need is a 4" slab with 3,000 psi concrete. Make sure it's on virgin soil or it will settle. Budget $3.50/SF turn-key, unless some significant grading is required. I'm a structural engineer who used to (amongst other things) prepare estimates for a concrete construction company.

Question ...
Apr 2, 2015, 5:53 PM
|
|
@bgjohns On an existing garage concrete pad that has settled a few inches and cracked (about 3 inches over 16 years), is it easier / cheaper to break up the old section and pour fresh or to jack up the old piece and fill under it (ram jack or similar procedure) ? The settled section is about 24' x 10' or about 1/3 of the total surface ... and yes, it was built on fill dirt.

Tear it up and pour fresh. If you still have concerns about the soil dig the fill out and replace with stone fill.

I like to use the bones of conquered foes on Tnet as aggregate fill, it does a great job with drainage and can be picked up for free in the PnR board.

Why are spec builders allowed to pour slabs on fill dirt??
Apr 3, 2015, 9:54 PM

How does that pass inspection?
1/3 of my garage slab has cracked and sunk about 3 inches since we bought the house 16 years ago.
From the topography of the lot, it's pretty obvious that the garage was built on top of fresh fill.
Just venting ...

Put down welded wire mesh before you pour. It

will pay off and prevent cracking in the future.

It won't if you leave it at the bottom of the pour.

It should be pulled up a little over an inch from the bottom of the slab. If you leave it laying on bottom you might as well leave it out.
