A possible way out of GOR
Jul 13, 2022, 11:02 AM

Maybe I'm wrong but if more than 8 members leaving the conference would end the GOR, then why doesn't Clemson and 8 other schools agree to approach the league office about a better deal or threaten to leave. Would they not then be allowed to either form their own conference or seek invites to other ones? I may be wrong but it seems that strength in numbers might be a solution.

I think we would only need 8 total, including us.

That would be over half the conference.
Clemson FSU Miami Va Tech UNC NC State Pitt Louisville
Then invite West Va and Cincinnati to join us for football, and invite the rest of the former ACC teams to join us for all other sports. We could call ourselves the Big Atlantic.

if they would have agreed to leave the Pac12 or BIg12 prior to OK, Tx, USC, UCL leaving.
They would say no way. They know their only hope was to keep the conference together.

You are probably right but since things have changed since then, and given the money problem, you might find willing partners. Worst case, if 8 teams left, you might then be able to negotiate a larger share if those teams left to form a new conference and are the bigger brands.
But by just agreeing to threaten to leave, if the threat is real, might be at least be enough to force a better deal or lessen the years. The current deal feels more like we are being held hostage. I'm surprised schools agreed to it at all for that many years.

ESPN and/or the ACC never cared about matchups

Look around the ACC. The schools you listed are generally the schools that when their team is playing at home, the crowd comes to see the home team, not who they are playing. Large, rowdy, home cookin' crowds that are the essence of college football.
Other than ACCCG's, VT and Clemson have played what, twice since we joined the league in 2004. Maybe three times in 18 years. Wouldn't matter where it was played. The TV appeal is what everyone seems to be trying to achieve, and the ACC has ignored matchups like this and others to continually play games with nothing but regional interest.
I am not comparing VT and Clemson in football prowess, but geez, if you want positive advertising, put the best images out front, and those are large crowds with traditions that everyone knows about...Howard's Rock and running down the hill, Enter the Sandman at VT games. Chief Osceola throwing down the spear. 3 times in 18 years?...really?
And now, in this new scheduling format, they take away a game that had been played annually for over 30 years in Miami/VT. A game that decided several Big East championships, and has decided at least one ACC championship in our first year in the league. I thought VT fans were upset about it until I went to Miami's board and read their thoughts after that news, and they seemed more upset about it than VT fans were. Again, the ACC just ignores games that always get good ratings, always are generally aesthetic games to watch with decent competition between teams with at least some history. VT/Miami is a rivalry that after this year will die on the vine, and that is not just our loss, but another programming miss for the ACC. Somehow, our new every year with Wake just will not replace Miami in anyone's mind.

Truths. All of it. As a league we've mismanaged our football product as badly as one could imagine to date. If we don't properly leverage our football assets from here on it will only get worse.

Based on what I have read we would get around if 8 left, but they also have to have formal invitations from other conferences. Not 100% sure, but don't think that if 8 left to form another conference they get around the GOR

Ok. Promise 1 school a spot that isn't in the acc. They could form a conference of 1 and extend invitations to 8 acc teams. Technically that might be sufficient.

teams and 1 outsider to form a new conference is the way to be more competitive financially? And you think that it somehow will help the Clemson football team that is probably the 2nd or 3rd best program in college football the last decade+?
Amazing the logic that goes on in here.

ESPN, fox sports and other media companies that buy college football TV rights are holding the cards. ESPN will decide if they will renegotiate the Swofford TV rights. These media buyers will decide whether the ACC remains in tact. These media buyers will ultimately decide whether we have two or three mega conferences or one national college football league.

ESPN is controlled by the big players (their owners' business interests) and advertising dollars. The universities are controlled by the board of trustees and they are either big players or own businesses that rely on their relationships with big players.
It's all about maximizing their profits. The more big games they have per season the more profits they make. So when we say what's in Clemson's best interest, how much of that is what's in the best interest of it's board of trustees (and their own personal businesses?)

"I may be wrong but it seems that strength in numbers might be a solution."
You ever see in those Africa safari documentaries where the massive herd of wildebeest come to the river crossing and pause because the crossing is tough and there are many crocodiles waiting for them that they have to navigate......and all it takes is for one to make the jump...

How would this break the GOR?
It would just mean that 8 teams owe their media rights and exit fee to the other 8 teams for 14 years.

There's not a team out there that could be added to the ACC to get anywhere close to par with the new B1G and SEC and that includes ND.

Besides, there's also not a team out there that will be willing to enter a sinking ship like the ACC and turn over their media rights until 2036. And if the ACC unanimously over turned the GOR or even shortened it in order to entice more teams Clemson, FSU, Miami, UNC and UVA would bolt the next day.
