Staying on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood but flying out of Orange County (John Wayne Airport) due to flight times. Should I get a rental car or pay for a shuttle/car service? Thoughts?

other than that, you are on the busiest freeway in LA. I'd say 2 hours but I haven't made that trip in a few years. Take the shuttle, ask them how long.

Okay,
well how long are you staying for?
Are you flying into LAX and then flying out of John Wayne?
Without traffic at all it should take about an hour and 15 minutes to get from LA to John Wayne but coming from the Sunset Strip it will take you half an our just to get to the darn freeway to even get down to John Wayne. So without traffic plan on 2 hours minimum.
With traffic, it sucks.
Don't get on the freeway between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM (I try and avoid it between 2:00 PM and 9:00 PM)
Don't get on freeway between 7:00 AM and 9:30 AM.
As far as a rental it depends on how many days you are staying.
Subway system is pretty worthless and zilch around Sunset Strip in West Hollywood.
I would imagine super shuttle would cost you 65 bucks minimum to get from West Hollywood to John Wayne. I live about 20 minutes from John Wayne and I think Super shuttle will cost me 45 bucks.
You can get a cheap enterprise rental for about 25 bucks a day.

Well to Suppershuttle from LAX to West Hollywood will be about 45 bucks I believe.
You could uber as well but I've never used uber
Or you could figure out the bus system and by getting on and off a few buses you will eventually make it to West Hollywood.
I don't know your plans for the duration of the stay so not sure if you will need further transportation once you get to the hotel.
I guess you could walk up and down the sunset strip. Or uber. That isn't a big deal but if you are wanting to go into Hollywood you may want a car.
It all depends on your plans.
But if staying that long, just get a cheap rental car for about 25 to 28 bucks a day.
Well John Wayne is a pretty quick airport to get in and out. If you get there by 12:15 you will be fine actually.
But lets say that you want to arrive at Noon for you 1:00 PM flight, I would leave LA at 10:30 AM if you wanted to cut it close.
But I would probably leave at 10:00 AM. Like I said it will take you probably 30 minutes just to get from where you are staying on the Sunset Strip to get to the Freeway and I guess your best bet is taking Sunset to the 405 Freeway South Entrance and getting on the freeway at that point.

I have never used über either and will have to check into it. The Andaz where I'm staying charges $35 or so per day for parking. I'm leaning towards a rental.

ah yeah that parking thing stinks.
Rip off that places charge that much to park over night.
San Francisco is 60 or more to park over night at a hotel.
