Most of us who run the company are in their 40s but a few are 50 and 60. Even though we have some responsibility, it really helps when we throw our 20 year olds under the bus and publicly ridicule them and then turn it into its their lack of talent and then make a further leap that they now have character flaws that we hadn’t seen in thorough vetting or in their first years of employment. I wonder if Dabo started following this if Clemson could be more successful. Now we’ve not won any National Awards or even regional awards in the past several years, but it’s something Dabo should consider.

Sounds to me your company just has some young people that aren't executing the way your exhausted vetting indicated they could be performing.
Sounds like you and the other managers need to meet and decide on what's causing that. Perhaps your training manuals need updating, or could it be they're not getting the proper training? Don't know, I don't work there but it sounds like you all need to figure it out.
What do you tell your customers? Are they complaining?

Interestingly, the loudest ones pretend to be customers but aren’t. Many slightly less loud have accounts outstanding. We call them non-paying customers. Thankfully most of our customers believe in our company and know what kind of character we are made of and that ultimately we will get it right even if we are a little off for a “season”.

uses past successes to excuse a sudden, seemingly inexplicable plunge to a level of mediocrity that should have been avoidable. Also sounds like your company castigates their customers, impugning THEM for simply observing the mediocrity and complaining about it. Strange things to be happening at a company where “best is the standard.”
It’s pretty clear to reasonable, rational people that your company really screwed up “this season.”

Always disconcerting to see the guys/gals next to you doing half what you do make the same amount or more if been around longer. Kind of like the work harder and smarter and get paid more betta model myself. Although that ###### "Federaltax" debit on my paycheck hurts a little more these days.

Has your company considered not paying its least effective 20 year old employees millions of dollars while paying the rest nothing? I really think that compensation policy is suboptimal.

They are old enough to go fight wars, so they are okay. On a serious note, attacking the players isn't needed. There are more constructive ways to say they aren't qualified or or not getting it done whatever. On the other hand, I am sure they have pretty thick skin by now. We don't want to ruin their Clemson experience though. It doesn't help the program in any way.

I’d say congratulations and thanks are in order. Congratulations for being at work. Thank You for being at work. For the first time in my life, it is readily apparent that far to many people are not working and it is impacting supply chains across the gamut. You wanna be a patriot? Go back to work. You don’t feel like working? No problem, sit in the dark and be hungry. Nobody owes you anything.

Your company product used to be good. I spent lot's of money supporting it and those who designed it, made it and delivered it. Your CEO and product designer are among the two highest paid in the industry and your product used to be great.
However, lately, the quality of the product produced by the workers sucks. The highly paid product designer is turning out the same old designs and the competition has left your stale designed product sitting on the shelves.
When I complained to your multi-millionaire CEO, he blew me off and told me the product designer was a genius, and the reason the product was failing to keep up with the competitors was because the one's who were actually in the plant making it just were not executing on the assembly line.
He said I should not worry and I should keep buying the products even though they were poorly designed and defective. He said, after all, I turned out a great product for the past 6 years, so you have no right to complain now if you are getting a crappy product.
I told him, he had hired this new plant manager to lead the production team but the new plant manager was really not getting the job done and he might want to give his backup plant manager a chance to see if things would improve. You know what he said? He said he was sticking with the new plant manager. He had what he had and I should just quit complaining and keep buying the product.
I told him I was a very long time loyal customer, I even supported the company when it really sucked in the past, and just wanted a better product to enjoy.
The CEO seemed a little arrogant and stubborn to me. I'll keep buying the crappy product and hope it gets better. But if not, maybe the Chairman of the Board of Directors will step in and hold the CEO responsible for his staff not getting the job done.

Find what motivates them and where they find happiness in the job, then build on that. Put them in a position to succeed the increase responsibilities. Be clear about your expectations, many new employees have never been in an formal office dynamic and apply social norms from their previous years that now are unacceptable. Sandwich criticism with praise for these little ########, lord knows this #### soft job market makes it a pain to re-hire. Hire for work ethic and culture fit, then have the 40 year olds train the heck out of them.

My first real boss/leader/mentor told me that, he also told me on my very first day of work that he "will give me as much rope as I need to hang myself". That was 20+ years ago and I never forgot it.

Sometimes the line workers make upper management look good and management gets complacent. When they lose some of the leaders from the line due to turnover, they have to do what they are paid for. They don't make big money because of what they do when things are doing well. They make big money to fix things when there are problems. Hopefully they understand they have to manage the staff that they have and not the one that they had.
