. now many running backs didn’t want to play in Streator saw fence… But we have not landed a major running back in the last two cycles.

Nah, CJ is fine. Running backs is the lone consistently bright spot on the offense.

CJ's backs were the only productive thing we had this year.

Yes they were productive. Can’t argue that. But which top back is he bringing in to replace them when they’re gone? He has missed on a good many of our rb targets. The guys that we ended up picking up in their stead may turn out to be great, who knows. But in reality they were fallback guys and not our main targets. I think he could use a little help in the recruiting aspect. But totally agree on running backs being our strong suit and he deserves credit there.

CJ recruits areas, not specifically running backs. HTH.

Etienne was one of those "fallback" guys. I think that turned out okay for everyone involved.

I don’t know if Riley will retain any of the existing staff. We will hopefully know more very soon.

But the OC has a large amount of input. I doubt Riley comes without the assurance that he can make any staff changes that he deems necessary.

But I want to be wrong.
I want him to be able to coach with Spiller, Richardson, Austin and Grisham and be able to tell Dabo that he needs better. But it would be even better if he made them better. That would tell us that we got a jewel.

Can't imagine he would accept an OC position but be forced to keep all of the position coaches that got his predecessor fired. Doesn't mean we will necessarily see him clean house but I'd expect some changes.

As I've said elsewhere, go through the past 15 years and look who was the main recruiter of each big running back we had.
CJ Spiller - Dabo (Wide receivers) Jamie Harper - Dabo (wide receivers) Andre Ellington - David Blackwell (linebackers) Mike Bellamy - Brad Scott (offensive line) Wayne Gallman - Chad Morris (Offensive Coordinator) Travis Etienne - Tony Elliott (running backs) Tavien Feaster - Jeff Scott (offensive coordinator) Kobe Pace - Danny Pearman (Special Teams) Will Shipley - Danny Pearman (Special Teams) Phil Mafah - Unlisted
So of our backs during the Dabo era, only one was recruited by the running backs coach, ETN. People don't realize that we don't use our position coaches, on the whole, as much as other teams do for recruiting. It's a team effort. The failure to sign a star running back can't fall on CJ. He's asked mainly to do one job, develop backs. He's done a good job at that.

Sorry, forgot Bowman. While he was one of our biggest recruiting disappointments, he was crazy in demand. Both OC's recruited him personally.

I don't see any way Grisham keeps his job with a new OC. He has been horrible, and unlike some other position coaches, it falls entirely on him. CJ, I don't think he'll be asked to go. Clemson doesn't recruit super heavily by the position guys, so the not landing elite backs isn't really on him as much as it was Elliott and Streeter (and Dabo). I think CJ has been pretty good (not excellent, but pretty good) at developing backs, which is his main job. Shipley is a very good football player, even if he's basically a worse ETN. Mafah is an absolute monster and with an elite line, we'd be saying he could be the best pure back Clemson ever had. Pace developed a lot while he was there. I don't actually know who our 4 guy was this year because we never played our backups.

A worse ETN....what a terrible comp. Shipley is the best and most consistent guy on the offense the last 2 years.

The offense, as bad as it was, actually got better (not great, but better in terms of rankings). The defense got worse, even though we were loaded on D.
