Brownell update
Mar 18, 2017, 11:04 AM
|
|
I just received a text that says nothing definitive is going to happen regarding Brad's job status at today's meeting. I was told Brad and Dan are just meeting and talking through things, and that a decision will not be made in this meeting.

Why I don't like that approach . . .
Mar 18, 2017, 11:27 AM
|
|
besides the fact that I think Brownell's record alone is enough to get him canned as it is. . . and why I don't think that will happen.
Let's say DRad keeps Brownell and has him make staff changes. Then what happens if Brownell has yet another disappointing season? If Drad brought him back for another season after that, DRad might be the one looking for a job, as such a move would be insane. I'm pretty certain that ain't gonna happen. That means next season would have to be a do-or-die season for Brownell. He would have to win big or he's gone. That would put unbelievable pressure on coaches and players, and make recruiting virtually impossible. That's why I don't see any way Brownell can stay for another year, but DRad may get creative with terms and buyouts and such, we'll see.

The past 2 years is the most athletic success we've had since the 80s, and that's not just football. DRad isn't getting fired.

make a rash decision based on the end of the season, he is much too reasonable and level headed for that. He will do the same as he did with the baseball situation, he will give him another year with the strongly worded instruction of "noticeable improvement" needing to be seen. I think next year is the year and then Dan will be able to say that he gave him every chance he could.

That would be wrong on every level.

First, he doesn't owe Brownell "every chance"; he owes Clemson the best coach possible to turn this thing around. If that is Brownell, so be it, but there is a solid body of evidence that says it isn't. It would be like letting a murder suspect go free when you had solid DNA evidence, video of the suspect committing the crime, multiple eye witnesses, motive, and a mountain of circumstantial evidence, then letting him off because you just felt he was innocent, and that there was a chance that he didn't do it.
Secondly, like I said, you can't bring a coach back for what everybody knows is a do-or-die season. The pressure to win would be unbearable, and recruiting would dry up completely. It would be a total disaster, especially if he didn't have a big year and have a miraculous turn around.

Sounds like Brownell may be being given an opportunity to job search or that he is being told of specific expectations for next season, i.e. "Be Good or be Gone." I certainly hope we are making the correct long term move, but I doubt it unless Brownell leaves on his own accord.
Go Tigers!

That's probably it. He will get another year if he agrees to a less costly buyout if he is fired next year. If he doesn't agree to it, he may be cut this year.

Do you think DRad is trying to gauge possible coach replacements interest before making a final decision on Brownell?

So a descision hasn't been made for him to stay?
Mar 18, 2017, 11:24 AM

I don't really understand how a descision hasn't been made. You either need to come out and "fully" support Brownell like he did about a week ago and let everyone know he's coming back or IF you haven't made that descision then who are you kidding? In that case we're even setting him up for future failure. It's hard enough to recruit at a CLEMSON, why keep the questions swirling? Right?

So we are seeing who we can get first!
Got to make the right choice. Just do not need a another BB or TB type coach!
Just keep what you got!
I say BB is done! Just working out the details!
He would have known if Clemson was keeping him after the the first meeting.
My 2 cents?
The same thing happen with JL.
Not worth the $500k you would save. It will be a bad year next year with BB just like it was with JL.
JL was a legend!

I hung with BB as long as I could. A change has to be made. Has to. You can't return what we did and fall flat.
Now that Keatts is gone, throw a bunch of money at Crean or go get an up and comer like Wade.

If for example , the new guy is Will Wade ...., You must keep in mind that Wade is from Shaka (OP) 40 minutes of havoc basketball tree. Would be a great hire but will struggle to play his style with the type players currently on campus.
It will be wors b4 better. BTW, for all the Shyatt bashers. He is a darn good basketball coach .

Exactly. People keep saying NCAA or bust next year. It should have been that the past two years. But next year is going to be ROUGH. Maybe not Shyatt bad but rough nonetheless. People look at this roster and think it's an NCAA Tournament team next year? I just don't see it, especially with the lack of defense.

It is fair to assume that it is a very important meeting since they are having it on a Saturday morning. If the meeting were just a formality, they would have waited until next week or even the week after.
Make no mistake, something of significance will come out of the meeting. This is not your run of the mill performance review.
