DJU's career

I get some fans never liked DJU, especially after Cade signed last year, I get we lost to South Carolina this year (we will find out Friday whether that was a bad loss) and I get DJU lost twice to Notre Dame but what are his career stats? Games played 33 Games started 27 Record as starter 21-6 Yards passing 5681 Completion rate 60% Yards running 911
In the history of Clemson football, DJU was not the best but was most certainly not the worst. Take personal feelings out of the equation and by the numbers, DJU was a pretty good QB with a record better than most.
Deshaun and Trevor set standards, and records, that will be very hard to beat. DJU did not have a great completion % but he was judged against Deshaun and Trevor did. Please be fair to Cade and not expect him to complete 80% of his passes the way he did against Carolina.

I don’t understand the - never liked DJ you comment

He underperformed on the field. It doesn’t have anything to do with liking him or not. The wide receivers have uunderperformedand they’ve taken heat… The deep end has been shaky and underperformed in they’ve taken heat. Nobody dislike DJ they dislike that he didn’t get the job done. And then, when you combine that with Dabo and Streeter's refusal to give cade, a fair shot, and it just made everything worse..
This is just like the earlier post that talked about how many people hate Dabo… Nobody hates Dabo except his opponents… But it’s OK to disagree with his coaching calls the way he handles players public persona the way he speaks… That doesn’t mean you dislike or hate someone. So the sooner people stop posting that stupidity, everybody can move on from the handful of disappointments the season...

Agree, no one hates him. Tajh Boyd was 32-8 which is 80 % KB as a starter had an excellent record and kb actually holds the Clemson record for most wins against top 25 teams.
DJ5 win percentage- 75% which is comparable to Cole stout. So DJ5 is the worst record percentage wise of the Dabo era.

We have been one dimensional on offense for the past two years, with NO consistent ability to pass. We’ve blamed the OL, WR’s, scheme and coaching however, it was due mainly to the QB play. DJ is a great kid and I wish him the very best. Though he did not start, Cade gave us a glimpse of what we used to be on offense. It’s not a matter of liking or disliking the person, rather the difference of effective and ineffective QB play, a wide open playbook or being very limited and one dimensional. This past year, the situation was made worse with the coaches head up their ####, either too stubborn to make a change or past promises made. All saw what we saw when Cade did play in our last game making the coaches look like buffons. The page has turned, our best QB is starting and DJ is on a new team. A new day for Clemson football and almost a New Year - look ahead and move on. The “never liked DJ” post is bogus - it was his QB play and not the player, personally.

This is one of the best posts on the subject. DJU was not the entire problem, but how the QB1 plays can make a big difference. Yes, the bar has been set high, lately. He was supposed to be able to meet the standard (highly rated coming out of hs). He just didn't. We will see how Cade does. I like what I saw in Charlotte.

Like him or not, our enjoyment of watching Clemson football the past two years has been considerably diminished by watching DJU. Yes, he's a great young man. But nervously waiting for him to screw up has made the games hard to watch.

those numbers are misleading though..if you watch every game he played he had only 3 with 250 plus passing..he wasnt judged against trevor or deshawn..all he had to do was be slightly above average but for the most part he played below that standard..he started out this season fairly well but for some reason that cuse game broke him mentally again.

KB does not get us to 12 - 0 either in 2021 or 2022 with the ho-hum WR corps that we put out there during these 2 seasons. Sorry.

I wonder why our “ho-hum” WR look so much better when there is a QB throwing a catchable and on-time ball to them???

DJU played during the time when our WR corp was its worst since 1998.
Someone needs to break it to you … all QBs outside of the Michael Vick, Lamar Jackson, and Caleb Williams types are not highly successful when their WRs are mediocre.
That’s just the way that FB works.
Let’s not start blasting C.Klubnik if he does not ring up big numbers against TN in the Orange Bowl.

Not only that our receivers aren't what they were 3 years ago.... he still struggled and I honestly think alot of it was mental and he caved under the pressure. I do believe a change of scenery will do him good and I think he plays great for the Beavers. I know I will be pulling for him!!!

DJ gave his best and never complained or pointed fingers. He just isn't an elite college QB. 60% completion rate isn't good enough (especially when a lot of those completions are behind the line of scrimmage). I appreciate what he did for Clemson but I'm glad he's gone and Cade is our guy. I wish them move would have been made 5 or 6 weeks earlier but that didn't happen. It's over, let's move on and win it all next year.

Those number look good, but that is just a summary and do not tell the whole story. For example, based on the numbers you provided, his average passing yards per game is 210 yards. And how many passing attempts did he have?
Another example, which you might understand better, Is you making 7,451 posts on TNET and yet, your pulse is only 68%. You think you have something but, when the results are in, "You Got Nuthin'".

No one dislikes DJ the person, he's almost universally adored as a teammate and friend. However, DJ's problems were compounded over time and some of it not completey his fault. Here's the list.
1) He started out hot as a Freshman when backing up TL. Disappointment in his inability to recreate those Freshman starter games compounded people's dissatisfaction over time.
2) He played at a time when the defense was of playoff caliber, yet we never made the playoffs with DJ as the starting QB.
3)The coaching staff had no viable backup up QB ready for the entirety of last year (when DJ was struggling) and apparently did not make sure Cade was ready earlier this year. This left DJ in the cross-hairs of fan disappointment when he was continuously touted by the staff as a "great QB" and anyone with eyes and modicum of self-respect would tell that this was NOT the case.
4) Our offensive line was a patchwork/sub-par renovation project under (the over-the-hill) Caldwell in 2021. DJ's never had great pocket presence/awareness so that season likely erased chunks of his already shakey self-confidence further compounding his problems as a QB.
5) Our WR's were mediocre. We missed on a few 5* recruits. None of them were good enough to consistently bail him out. Over time the trust between him and that group deteriorated to the point where the WR's appeared to not even be trying as they had no confidence that Dj could deliver them the ball. A vicious circle of failure.
6) DJ's parents broke up. DJ was still a kid and likely a fragile one at that when this became public. I firmly believe he was rocked by their break-up and he wanted to quite Clemson football and return to the West Coast after last year. Dabo and DJ's family ultimately talked him into staying and we got what we got in 2022.
The END and now it's off to Oregon State for DJ.

Clemson never won a big time game while he was on the roster.
I dont care about this analysis. Truth is we have had 3 years of fallen from grace football .

Your last sentence is the most relevant. Expectations are over the top on Cade right now. He is going to have his moments where he doesn't walk on water. The good news is that I think he has the mental/emotional foundation to deal with adversity and that will help him get through any struggles that come his way.

The games he won were due to the defense EXCEPT for WF this year. He was really good that game. Clearly his problems are mental. I supported him and always wanted him to succeed, but football at this level and above is not going to be his thing.

Nobody hated DJ. There is no reason to hate the guy. Everybody was just frustrated with his play to the point the majority of the fanbase gave up waiting on him to get better because it just wasn't going to happen.
Also, starting record doesn't tell the story of how bad he was here. 2021 he was gifted with the #2 defense in the country that kept us in every single game, no matter how much the offense shidded their pants. This year it was more or less the same, except the defense took a step back and the offense took a small step forward. But it wasn't our amazing quarterback play that won us the games. It was doing just enough (minus Wake Forest, which was our best offensive game of the year, much like 2021 it was the best offensive game then as well). Give us Kelly Bryant in 2021 and I think we go 11-1, possibly 12-0 in the regular season and also go 11-1 and possibly 12-0 this year in 2022 (Notre Dame would be a tough one to still overcome no matter the QB.)
Stats are going to lie to you here. Starting record doesn't mean squat when it is a team game and the wins don't solely lie on DJ's shoulders when his play has put us in more jeopardy to lose more games than it was to win. DJ just wasn't a good or great QB like we are used to. It is what it is, don't sugarcoat it and gaslight yourself and everyone else. I wish him the best and hope he figures it out at Oregon State. But it really is time to put it to rest.

Just think, after 2 more years he might have qb'ed over 40 winning games and have 10,000 passing yards and 2,000 rushing. Hope he gets drafted then.

Everyone liked DJ from the start, we were thrilled to have the #1 or 2 QB recruit in the country.
Expectations were justifiably high, especially after his great performance during his freshman year.
However, he finished his sophomore year ranked something like 119th all of all Division I quarterbacks. That was atrocious.
He improved some this year, he looked especially good in the Wake game, but then he kind of fell apart, and was back to his old ways of making incredibly terrible throws.
I don’t think we have ever seen a more highly ranked quarterback perform so poorly. That’s the head scratcher, and that’s the reason for so much frustration with DJ. Love him, great kid, he just didn’t live up anywhere near the justified expectations that he would have come out of high school.
And don’t forget, the other highly ranked QB in his class, Bryce Young, won the Heisman last year.

So far he’s a mediocre college QB.

This is misleading. You can't look at stats in a vacuum. Football is now extremely passer friendly. Comparing raw stats in 2022 vs. 1970 is absurd. You have to compare how he did vs. other QBs of the same era. In that metric, DJ is the worst QB Clemson ever had. The stats this century in QB rating:
2000: Woody #22 2001: Woody #36 2002: Willie #81 2003: Charlie #33 2004: Charlie #94 2005: Charlie #39 2006: Will #37 2007: Cullen #22 2008: Cullen #58 2009: Kyle #73 2010: Kyle #77 2011: Tajh #31 2012: Tajh #4 2013: Tajh #6 2014: Cole #80 2015: Deshaun #12 2016: Deshaun #19 2017: KB #56 2018: Trevor #21 2019: Trevor #9 2020: Trevor #11 2021: DJ #104 2022: DJ #76
So, in this century, relative to the field, DJ was the worst Quarterback. You cite his overall yards, but look at his average yards per attempt. Those numbers are even worse. His accuracy is the worst of all.
