at a Clemson game about 10 years ago.
I said, "Hey, it's Tommy Lasorda."
He looked straight at me and replied, "Heyyyyy, it's meeeeee!"
We both started laughing.

Mr. Lasorda played AA ball for the Greeneville spinners. He married a girl from there and has a lot of extended family still in the area.

in the early-mid 70s. He had what I assume was a bodyguard, who had him by the arm. I was maybe 13 or 14, and I sort of knew who he was, and I said "excuse me"; my father said to him something like "I appreciate the job you are doing for us", and he nodded and smiled as he was scurried away.

Back in the 80s, when "Dyanasty" was a big hit on TV,

|
|
I was at a game with my parents. We sat right by the portal in the North stands, and my 60-something-yr old mother pointed to a guy walking up the steps from field level. "That looks like Bo Hopkins from Dynasty". I was focused on the game and didn't pay much attention. He got to the top of the steps and stopped, and she said "I think it's him!" It was between plays or a timeout or something and all was pretty quiet when my mother stood up and screamed like a schoolgirl "Bo, Bo, Bo,!!!". My father and I slumped down as far as we could. The guy looks at my mother, smiles, and motions for her to "come on down". It was indeed Bo Hopkins. My mother nearly broke her neck getting out and down the steps. He took her by the hand, put her arm in his, and disappeared thru the portal as people all around stood an applauded. They were gone for about 15 minutes, and she came back with an autograph and a story for life. She said they walked to the fence behind the stands, where a man handed him something thru the fence in a cup. She then realized he was seriously buzzed. Aside from that she said he was very polite and down to earth. He escorted her back to her seat, to another round of applause. I'm pretty sure we beat GT that day, but this made her day.

Short guy.
He did, however, speak at a patriotic service we had at our church on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. He made one comment that I thought was humorous. He said the only reason he went to SCU was because he didn't have the grades to get into Clemson.

Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox played minor league ball in Greenville for a couple seasons and like Tommy Lasorda, married a girl from the upstate area. He's become a pretty big Clemson fan, he was at the South Carolina game last fall.
